He was the brother of Sheila Mercier, the actress who played Annie Sugden in Emmerdale Farm.

Also, until her death in 2013, he was married to the lovely Scottish actress, Elspet Gray.

That wonderful campaigner for Mencap, actor Lord Brian Rix, has died aged 92. It's just been announced.
