I collect Ainsly pots etc, porcelain, they sit on a bookcase in the lounge by the side of the arm chair where I sit.

I stood up to walk across the room on my way to bed and there was a loud crack. We couldn't work out what it was, thought something had fallen down. Then saw that one of the pots had cracked and fallen into pieces. It had no flaws or cracks in it, had not been dropped or even hardly moved and had sat ther at least 5 years, probably more. We are totally mystified.

Any ideas what could have caused it? It sort of imploded with the sides falling in but the lid stayed on :-S :-S

Could be the heat.

Any chance there was a really good restoration that you didn't know about?

I have had problems with mugs in the dishwasher at times. Sometimes there's a fault e.g. a bubble in the body of the pottery hidden from view, the heat seems to find these faults and one day it can't take it anymore and breaks across the fault. Quite often it's been the handle but on the odd occasion it's been in the wall or the base and it's shattered the mug.

This could be the case here, the heat you've had recently has put pressure on an area due to a hidden fault and eventually it caused the break. Another possibility is as Supercrutch wrote there could have been a hidden restoration and the heat got to that. Glue can dry out, look at the pieces are there tell tale signs of the glue?

Pretty sure there was no restoration. and as to the heat our lounge stays really cool no matter how hot outside and recently we have not had it that hot. It has never been in the dishwasher either. I think it will remain a mystery I shall be watching all the others now!
