We had a problem with blocked sewers a few years back, turned out to be the elderly lady putting wipes down the loo, then it happened again, it was the next door neighbour giving her grandson those 'kan do'wipes for the toilet when he stayed with her, which was quite often. Now she looks after her cousin's twins but must have learned as we haven''t had further problems. Come to think of it, haven't seen them advertised lately.

we used to have a house on an acreage further north. There was no sewer system because it was so remote, we all had our own septic tanks or septic fields.

The toilet blocked up soon after we started using it, so we had to call in the "honey truck" to come and empty the system and make sure the piping was clear.

He later showed us about 12 socks and a truck suspense unit (the sort used to hold a camper on the back of a pick-up truck.

All had been pulled out of the piping about 10' from the house.

Report in the Mail today flushing condoms is causing "Jhonnybergs" :-D

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3878254/Careless-lovers-flush-condoms-toilet-sex-creating-huge-sewer-blocking-Johnnybergs-say-water-chiefs.html

My cousins caravan site had a notice forbidding items from being flushed, along with the obvious banned items nappies and wipes were toothbrushes! Personally despite water saving measures I rinse mine under the tap not in the bowl! ;-)

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 27 Oct 2016 12:14

our row of houses had problems twice with the sewer run blocking up

both times it was the lady around the corner putting disposable nappies down the loo as they were intact when the block was found and cleared

they would get so far in the sewer then catch somewhere and then the waste would back up behind it

the manholes would then block up

she denied it first time but it cost us the call out charge by the water board

we couldnt let the neighbour where it blocked pay the charge as it wasnt his fault so we all chipped in

the second time she got told you are the only one with a baby living in the run of houses so the next time you will pay the charge

It didnt happen again !!

When my sister, mum and I went on holiday in a hired camper van, we were told Tesco's 'luxury' loo roll was the best to use, as it was least likely to block the system!! ;-)

Personally, I don't like the quilted stuff anyway. :-D

Pee,Poo and Paper(toilet paper) are the only things that should be flushed down the loo. :-) Def no Calvin Kleins :-0

A few years ago a friend of ours had problems with the loo backing up,
no amount of private rodding would permanently clear it..

eventually a professional co. was brought in..........

about three manholes along, there was the problem...
two pairs of Calvin klein underpants........

I saw that MTG horrible.

SylviaInCanada Report 26 Oct 2016 20:39

we were told back in the 1970s that disposable diapers (sorry -------- nappies) were NOT disposable down the toilet, despite what it then said on the package.

Nor were tampons, as the strings could catch on irregularities on pipe walls and start a blockage.

MotownGal Report 26 Oct 2016 17:54

There was a local news programme (6pm slot) where a reporter when down the London sewer with an engineer.

The sewerman said they were going to see an Iceberg. My goodness, it was horrible!

Where people had flushed fat and oil down their drains and sinks, it had congealed, this had formed into a hard mass with wet wipes, and disposable nappies, and sanitary products. It had gone solid, and the reporter said that it smelt very bad too.

Why people flush any of those things away is beyond me.

I don't understand why it's taken so long to warn people. A plumber told me in the early 1980s about nappy liners made of the same material as the wipes. He gave a warning to several mums in our area after a main pipe got blocked. Mine were out of nappies by then.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 26 Oct 2016 11:31

There's been so much publicity in recent years regarding wipes causing sewer blockages, its surprising anyone still takes the risk. Even the smallest bathroom has space for a small bin. Pure thoughtlessness & laziness.

The demonstration on TV tested various products for 5 minutes. That, in my opinion, is too long for most domestic outflows.

another item that causes blockages.............cotton buds

kitchen towels don't breakup properly either....specially "one sheet"!

SheilaSomerset

SheilaSomerset Report 26 Oct 2016 11:25

I NEVER flush anything other than loo paper. I use wipes sometimes to clean the toilet, but always bin them.

Anyone see the news item on these on BBC this morning? They should not be marked "flushable" as they are not and they cause major blockages of sewer pipes.
