Are they a bit gutless this year?

I have made some ketchup with the end of somebody's crop and it needed more suar than usual and the only thing that seems to be missing from the flavour of the ketchup is tomato.

Can't help sorry. I don't think I've ever made ketchup. Any late tomatoes always got turned into chutney.

What are you like with pumpkins?
Daughter has just come in and said that Sainsburys in the local small town are selling 'carving pumpkins' for 10 p each.

I love pumpkin pie.

All I do is cut up some pumpkin into smallish cubes, stew it with some sultanas or raisins and sugar. I have been known to put ginger, lemon or cloves into it.

Put it between pastry and bake it.

Tomato ketchup is sweet and sour, it needs some sugar and usually some vinegar.

If you spray aspirin and water on your tomatoes

they are much sweeter when ripe

Feeding it to plants can help 'ward off diseases and boosts yields'
Drug is very effective at warding off blight, a devastating fungal disease
Gardeners advised to spray plants with a solution containing the drug
Also told to soak the seeds in an aspirin liquid before sowing

When I used to grow them, I'd try to find the oldest variety possible - these were usually tastier, and insect-proof!!

This year my ballerina apple tree has had a glut of apples

Sad to see them dropping off on to the patio because they are too many for me to eat

The pear tree too has had its usual huge crop. They are conference pears and lovely to eat but I can't keep up with the crop
