I like it.

Just spent ten mins trying it out and it looks extremely useful.

Wonder if this is part of the digitisation program that was mothballed a few years back because the money ran out.

Just giving this a nudge, because I was having trouble finding it.

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Nov 2016 20:32

Actually, a death is just shown as the number, there is no qualifying "mnth" or "yr"

.......... not much of a problem if the baby has an unusual name, not so easy if you have rellies like mine where everyone uses the same names over and over again in every generation!

someone on another site posted that GRO is aware of this glitch and is looking at it

MR_MAGOO

MR_MAGOO Report 14 Nov 2016 20:26

Just to add.........

The death option states death in years. Not so.

I have a baby born M Qtr1868 dying S Qtr 1868 5 months old.
showing 5 years.

oh yes, I had forgotten the middle name in full!

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 6 Nov 2016 18:07

Well, in some cases the middle name, as indicated by an intial, is given in full. Very handy for finding possible deaths elsewhere.

E.G - The index on FreeBMD only gives Florence M. The GRO site says it's Florence Margaret.

BrianW .

you mean you want information BEFORE 1837?

GRO did not exist then, so they don't have any records to digitise!

Try FReeReg2 fro information from Parish Registers. It's a work in progress by volunteers, so you have to keep going back .............

http://freereg2.freereg.org.uk/

If it's after 1915 ....... then all the information that you can see is already on Freebmd. You don't get any more information on the new GRO digitised records than the addition of mmn on births, and of age on deaths

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 6 Nov 2016 10:06

As posted on another thread

According to Lost Cousins newsletter, there will be the option to buy digitalised copies for £6 from 9 Nov. Only a limited number of purchases will be available within the trial period.
.......
The trial will last for only 3 weeks, but may close earlier (only 45,000 PDFs will be made available at this price). My guess is that those 45,000 PDFs will be sold very, very quickly -
Births: 1837 to 1934
Deaths: 1837 to 1957

BrianW Report 6 Nov 2016 09:15

Shame it only covers 1837 to 1915.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Nov 2016 21:10

GRO does only have registers post July 1 1837 ................

what has happened is that they have digitised records for Births and Deaths with more information added, especially mmn on births, and have now made those available to search for free.

Then you can order the certificate if you want to know more ............ eg, the address or occupation of father, etc.

They say they are working on Marriages.

Note that not all birth certificates have mmn for some reason, so that can be a difficulty.

The only snag that I have noticed is that they do not seem to have a system to add mnths or yrs to the age of someone who has died, so just the number appears .......

........ bit disconcerting when you have a very distinctive name but the age indicates they were born 8 years before it actually happened. Then you realise it has to be them, and they were 8 months old!

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 4 Nov 2016 21:20

sometimes births, as most of you know, are registered in the fathers name(IF) you know it, but in the case of not married births...if you know the childs first name...search under the maiden name for any births
