I didnt feel a thing, even the one that apparently was felt in Pukekohe (33km from here). Where I live there are quite a few old fault lines and have felt some quakes in the past.

Yep, woken by irregular knocking sound then we got a good sway - timed at 0008. No damage up this way. At my age, "I've seen a few" as the song doesn't go!
Sorry for those who have been affected.

From BBC

The tsunami arrived in the north-eastern coast about two hours later. Officials said the first waves may not be the largest, with tsunami activity possible for several hours.

Residents were warned to head inland or for higher ground along the coast.
A gauge at Kaikoura, 181 km (112 miles) north of Christchurch, measured a wave of two metres (6ft 5ins), according to Weatherwatch.co.nz.

Smaller waves are said to be arriving in Wellington and other areas, the website said.

Residents in the Chatham Islands, an archipelago 423 miles (680km) south-east of the mainland, were also being warned a wave would hit imminently by the civil defence.

Thousands of people have already evacuated their homes, Radio New Zealand reported.
Others have taken to social media to offer people a safe bed for the night.

Have checked with EMSC and 26 after shocks so far.

A powerful earthquake has struck New Zealand’s South Island, according to US geological experts.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude-7.4 quake hit 59 miles (95km) from Christchurch, which is still recovering from the 2011 earthquake that killed 185 people and destroyed many buildings.

New Zealand lies on the notorious Ring of Fire, the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.

A cousin living on S Island posted 18 mins ago -

Holy hell, that was terrifying, the earthquake just kept on going and going, the caravan was rocking so much, totally woke me up and poor (the dog) kept growling. Still getting aftershocks too. I do hope that everyone in Christchurch is ok, if it was this bad here, it must be even worse down there.
Thankfully we are all safe and undamaged.

1 min i.e. 1149 GMT
13 earthquakes in the South Island since just before midnight, different places for them all. Even Pukekohe in north island got one. 4.4 according to geonet nz
Do hope that everyone is ok.
