Ann ...............

the advice to those of us who spend our lives in the earthquake-prone areas, is to only contact one person and have that person contact everyone else. The idea is that we name that person in advance (eg, eldest son), and let everyone else know that.

Otherwise you run the risk of clogging up phone lines, broadband, or whatever system is being used. More frustration ....... and possibly making it difficult for rescue services to do their jobs.

As I said Sylvia she has done that. My main worry is if she will be able to eat regularly as she is type 2 diabetic I hope she managed to take her medication with her.

Thank you Mersey. To those of us who don't live with the thought of earthquakes it is quite scary. It is good that we heard from her and that she should be safe. Just a worry about after shocks etc when you don't know.

I'd certainly agree with Sylvia. Our daughter and her husband lived in San Francisco for a few years. We arranged that both we and his parents would act as conduits to pass on messages to other members of the family. Who ever heard from them first would let the other set of parents know.

Obviously not applicable in your case, Ann, but the advice given to them by the British Consulate was for relatives not to panic for the first week as communications could have gone down. Worry guts Mum had suggested they ought to register with the Consulate, just in case.

Try not to worry - Your daughter will be fine.

I did get an update first thing this morning, sent 9 hours before. They were able to retrieve their belongings and the electric was back on and they were hoping to move on the next day if the roads were ok, but about 3 hours after she sent that there was another Quake I believe and I have heard nothing since. It is the middle of the night there so we haven't a clue what is happening now. It is a wait and see situation. Apparently the hotel have been very good and they have been put in a timeshare villa. Not sure if that is all 15 in one. The day before she sent the email, which would have been yesterday I think, they sat in the sum drinking G&Ts so not all bad.

No need to worry about food, I am quite sure we Kiwis would have plenty and would even find a way of giving her a hot meal. Of course, the main problem could be providing fresh water, but there is always the bottled stuff (yuk).

She is fine now, yesterday they were able to leave and are now on the West coast, I thinkthey are now, after a good nights sleep on their way to Queenstown.
