Christmas Cards.

I received my first one last Sunday followed by a second one on Tuesday.

Anyone else had any yet?

Perhaps this should be on the bland thread?

Island Report 18 Nov 2016 14:09

I might just send as I receive. That way no-one will feel they have to send me one because I got in first. If that makes sense. LOL
Take the pressure out of Christmas. :-D

I had one today but given by hand when we met up with friends for lunch and to exchange presents.

All mine made, written and addressed ready for posting.

Got to start on present wrapping now. Should take a while! :-D

I really don't feel like doing it this year! But I've cut down Mum's list as she finds it a bit much now, so will have to do some of those. Also some people don't know of our sad events this year so will have to do some note writing too. Usually get first card beginning December.

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Nov 2016 00:58

we send a Christmas letter now, to a much cut-down list. Letter is prepared, not printed out .......... but we need to get our act together!

We haven't received any cards or letters yet ........

....... up until about 5 or 6 years ago, our first Christmas card arrived before the end of October. A certain lady obeyed the UK "post before date" for sea mail, but they always came by airmail!

Dermot

Dermot Report 20 Nov 2016 10:13

With cousins in New York & elsewhere, our family historical contact in the pre-E-mail era was the expected exchange of Christmas cards or perhaps a birthday card on special occasions.

I know for a fact that the first Christmas cards received by my forefathers in Ireland came from America. They must have been posted in September to arrive by boat in Ireland by December & they were a welcome sight with lovely depictions of the new born child Jesus.

Even so, the picture of George Washington was also a sight for sore eyes when a few dollar notes were included with the card. One neighbour of ours would cut open the envelope & shake it. If a few dollars didn't fall out, he wouldn't bother to read the card at all.

But, to be fair to those who emigrated years ago in desperate times, there usually were a few dollars enclosed & those dollars would be put to good family use to buy a few luxury items for the festive season at a time when there was no 'dole' or other state benefits in the old country.

More recently, Christmas cards sometimes include a 'Round Robin' summary of family events during the previous 12 months - something Irish or UK residents don't normally bother with. It's not in our nature - being a shy & reserved lot!

None sent, none received... I still have to write mine :-(

I do have a 'girly' gathering on the 30th November and the first batch will be handed out then.

Friends and distant family, will be posted 1st December, 2nd class. Overseas the same time.

None received by post here yet.
When I was a child, the first card to arrive was usually from New Zealand from one-time neighbours. I looked forward to seeing the New Zealand view or beautiful flowers often portrayed.

I've handed over just 2 cards with parcels, when I met up with my sister in Hampshire on Saturday.

I have bought cards and stamps, so will get the overseas ones ready soon.
