She was a lovely lady. When I knew her (1960's) she was a widow living in Cornwall, with a smallholding with 12 cows, pigs and chickens. The pigs ran free all day, but were put in a barn at night - and every morning, she would stroke the sows and piglets, and tickle their tummies before letting them out.
She 'controlled' the cows using a long piece of grass.
When Commander N died, she married Commander D, who became a Tory Agent for the New Forest after the war.
About that time, my other gran, who was a member, and Treasurer of the New Milton Labour Party, became a member of the New Forest Labour Party :-0

We never saw these two ladies together. :-D :-D :-D

is frustrating!!
A while back, I found my gran on the 1939 register - in prison - and she gave a few different surnames :-S
She was also cautioned in 1940 for not having her car headlight 'masked' properly.
Well, I noticed her 'home' address on the headlight article.
One thing she always insisted was that when Commander N was killed in the war, SHE should have got the widow's pension, not his wife :-0

Anyway, I looked for Commander N (fairly common Surname, and not a Commander in 1939) in the register - Almost the same address, same house name, same road, but gran's address was given as Wembury, Commander N's was Plympton St Mary.

Bit of research - the same place, on the South coast of Devon :-0 :-0 :-0

Where was Mrs N? She was in Bideford, directly opposite Wembury - on the North Coast - with a male lodger(?) 10 years her junior!!

Maybe gran was right, she should have got the pension. He obviously wasn't living with his wife. Sometimes gran said Commander N (25 years her senior) was dad, and his sister's father. Sometimes she denied it.

I tried to find the actual house they lived in - but house names change.
However, looking on Google maps, the houses one end of the road are exactly how my dad described them - large and set in woodland. He also told me Commander N used to visit when they lived here.

Still haven't found out where my dad was (he wasn't at the house), but I found 3 more reports of my gran doing nefarious things, whilst living at three different addresses (did they move to avoid the scandal?)!

November 1935 – False Pretences (bouncing cheque)
November 1936 – False Pretences (bouncing cheque)
October 1937 – Fined for having no dog licence
March 1939 – False Pretences – Collecting money for the destitute – and keeping it. (imprisonment)
February 1940 – Mutilated mask on car light

She used Commander N's surname when charged - but in the March 1939 newspaper report, it states that her real surname is J.
