Thank you for that information Rollo.

As I feared the retail market is being flooded with these drives (Seagate Barracuda) at what look like bargain prices. It is pretty poor that leading retailers are selling this junk though the low prices might give buyers reason for caution.

ST3000DM001C both 2TB and 3TB

AVOID !!!!!
- failure rate year 1 is > 30%

nb: other Barracude drives should be ok

A lot of people are buying 3 TB hard drives for local NAS storage as it is a convenient way to store media, photos, movies etc. Using RAID any data failure can be recovered. As ever people look for a bargain.

Some just shove a 3TB drive in as their main drive but it then becomes a pretty big single point of failure ...

DON'T BUY THE SEAGATE ST3000DM001C 3TB !!!!!!!!
It is being offered at silly prices (£ 50-60) but should not be used at any price. If you are in contact with tech support suppliers who tend to be very cost focussed make sure to steer them away from this unit. If you have it then get it replaced urgently.

There is no general problem with 3TB SATA drives just this unit. 'cos major commercial buyers are aware of the problem individuals and small biz are being targetted by those who have bought up remaindered stock. There is a lot of it out there.
