We go to the quiz at the social club and the quizmaster asks a lot of questions that are relevant to what our team know so win rather more often than we could reasonably expect.

In eight years I have probably challenged a couple of answers when I have been fairly sure I was on solid ground but it is only a quiz so there is not much to be gained by doing so anyway.

Also taking part in the quiz is a man who is truly not very bright at at all but nobody would know or, indeed, care if he would keep his trap shut but he has to talk loudly about what he knows to make himself feel, if not look, clever.

One question was'What did Dirty Den present his wife with as a Christmas gift?'

The answer was, of course, divorce papers.

As the answer was read out He had to say' The proper answer is Decree Nisi'.

Why did I have to join in?

'No, it would be the petition, the decree nisi comes after the hearing.' A woman in his team had been a legal secretary so she explained the sequence to him.

He said' decree absolute then.'

I couldn't leave well alone so I explained that that came even after the decree nisi.

Losing his rag now, he went outside , shouting behind him, 'Well it is divorce papers!'

Wasn't that where we came in?
