Just a thought but why not a "hide post" option, or Hide read posts if no further postings?
Surely that would suit both sides.

Island ...........

are you suggesting that I have no right to comment on any thread on GR that I might wish to?

that's dictatorship!

LaGooner Report 21 Jan 2017 16:08

It is a good idea to have them all in one place in my opinion and Barbra thank you for contacting Genes with it. As has been said before any thread that you have contributed to you can find on your own stored threads so they will always be there for you to look back on.

I asked for threads I'd posted about friends to be unstickied after 2 - 4 weeks. That, to me, was a reasonable time.

Good on you, Barbra for raising it, it's something we need GR to look at and regulate, in my opinion, otherwise the front page could be full of stickies for friends who have passed. The threads are still there for people to see, if they choose.

As has been said this subject comes up every now and then.

Personally I don't mind how long the threads are on the board
for members who have passed, they will eventually be unpinned
when the time is right to the poster/ close friend.

Sound thoughts and words, SylviaIC, and I agree with you.

I also agree with you, Barbra. You can't please everyone.

The only thing I could add is that it would be a dull old world if everyone thought the same.

I am sure at some point the people who have posted threads about our friends who sadly leave us will ask for their threads to be unpinned as has happened in the past and I will do that with my thread about Huia in a while, but I didn't want to see all the current ones unpinned in one go, that's all I meant. With the lack of input from GR atm, I was afraid that any call to them about the subject might mean unpinning all that are there at present

This subject always becomes very disruptive .................

one side cannot see what the other side is talking about

and that means EACH side cannot see or understand.

As far as I am concerned, no-one, Liz, has suggested that Huia's thread be unpinned

Barbra raised the question of a special Remembrance Thread ....... though I'm thinking she might have meant a Remembrance Board .......... just as others have in the past.

However, this is a subject that has never failed to raise anger and angst whenever it is raised ......... and I think it is raised once every year, on average.

I fail to see why we as individuals cannot express what we ourselves feel without being castigated by certain members.

Surely the fact that the subject is raised by different members at different times behooves us to have a rationale discussion about it? We are after all adults, and deemed capable of being sensible about things.

Yet, several members will always get very angry at everyone else for even daring to raise the subject.

That means that they are attempting to speak for everyone else, just as Island has accused Barbra of doing!

now I'm ducking behind the parapet, and donning that old tin hat, for I'm certain that I have laid myself open to nasty comments ;-)

Island

Island Report 20 Jan 2017 23:24

I agree with you Liz.
I can't think why one member has taken it upon herself to speak for all others.
It is unlikely that GR will take any notice but hopefully they wouldn't act on one members say so.

Huia's only been gone for 6 weeks, so I would like to see her thread pinned for a little longer.

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Jan 2017 19:03

This is a discussion that occurs at regular intervals.

One suggestion made last year was that threads should be pinned for a limited time, say 6 months.

Threads do not disappear when unpinned, they can always be found in My Threads, and so can always be found by those friends who wish to post an updated message.

Another suggestion made in earlier times was that there could be a Remembrance Board, which would have separate threads for those who have died. Thus names would not be "lumped together" on one thread.

My personal preference would be to see remembrance threads on this Board but fr them to be unstickied after a certain time period ............. I don't need to keep seeing a thread to remember those close to me who have died.

BUT that is MY preference.

GR will do what it wants to do .......... which at the moment appears to be nada

Island

Island Report 20 Jan 2017 14:26

Spare a thought for those who were personal friends of deceased members - they may not want to have them lumped in with others. I don't understand why you want to interfere with this Barbra.

I think a more sensible and sensitive idea would be a single thread for those who feel the need to 'announce' the deaths of famous people. 'Chat' has been more like an obit column in recent times. I've always thought members used 'chat' as a cheerful distraction not to read depressing national news.

You'll be lucky! There's been no sight of an employee for months, if not years.

Why not start a thread, copy & paste deceased members names & links to existing threads. Then ask GR to Pin it.
