Hi Elizabeth,

I make quite a few different variations all based on the SW "overnight oats ". Please note these are just ideas and are not always fat free or low in calories it they do make a very tasty breakfast.

I use a small Kilner type jar and 35-40g of ordinary porridge oats. All mixed well in the jar. This goes in the fridge overnight. I give them a good stir before eating.

1) Oats, mashed banana, Muller Vanilla fat free yoghurt ( with or without chocolate bits ), about a tablespoon of strong black coffee. I usually put a good teaspoon of coffee into the empty yoghurt pot and pour a little water over it to dissolve. About ten Chocolate pieces, the type used for cakes and cookies are nice with this and give a bit of crunch. ( optional )

2). Oats, any type of mixed berries, frozen are good as you get some juice when they have defrosted. Any type of Muller fruit yoghurt that will go with the berries.

3). Oats, mashed banana, Muller banana custard yoghurt. ( optional teaspoon of sugar free jam ).

4). Oats, mixed frozen tropical fruit, Muller, or other, peach, tropical fruit or vanilla fat free yoghurt.

5). Oats, Muller vanilla or other make vanilla and rhubarb fat free yoghurt, a couple of ounces of cooked rhubarb, this may need to be sweetened with sugar or sweetener to taste.

6). Oats, mashed banana, Muller vanilla, or if available peanut, yoghurt. Pot of Hartleys sugar free jelly. If peanut yoghurt is not available a spoonful of peanut butter can be added instead.

7) Oats, mashed banana, Muller Strawberry fat free yoghurt , small pot of Hartleys sugar free jelly.

8). Oats, mashed banana, small slice of sponge cake or biscuit, crumbled, Muller vanilla yoghurt or a small pot of light custard, Small pot of Hartleys jelly. Makes a type of trifle.

Of course these are just ideas and can be adjusted according to taste, banana can be left our if desired etc. The last three are really just variations on the same theme and any combinations can be used, different flavoured of jelly, fruit or yoghurt and they dont have to be fat or sugar free. Those little chocolate bits are a nice treat in several of the variations.

I thought the idea sounded revolting when I first read about them but I am now converted.

My daughter does a hot version with instant porridge and frozen berries popped into the microwave for a couple of minutes.

M.

It may have been my breakfast recipe, which I will repeat. 3 or 4 dessertspoons of oats, 1 of ground almonds, 1 of oatbran, a small handful of sultanas and four dried apricots, chopped. Soak in soya milk while I have a shower and walk down for my paper. The soaking makes it less harsh on the stomach. My cholesterol levels from last weeks blood test: total serum 3.6, HDL 1.45, LDL 1.8.

lilliesnan - thanks. Your version sounds good, think oatmeal might be necessary if just using yoghurt but might try that next. The onegreenplanet recipe is obviously for vegans, but the rest of us could ignore the non-dairy descriptions and use real milk and yoghurt, skimmed milk, no fat yoghurt etc if we wish.

I am following the SW plan and often have overnight oats for breakfast. I don't know if this is what you are looking for

Put 40g of oats in a bowl. Cover with berries of your choice (frozen are best as they thaw overnight) and top with yoghurt. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight.

Stir before eating . You can add any extra fruit at this stage if you want.

Really tasty and good for breakfast if you are in a hurry.

Andysmum - thanks! It must have been on Facebook that I saw it! - a daughter is a vegan so they go on sending me the onegreenplanet bits . Yet another senior moment. I had already bought the oats!

Isn't that the basis of muesli. It is only eaten with milk because the British didn't know what to do so they treated it like cornflakes.

I can't find any threads on here about oats - soaked or otherwise, but Google produced this, which might help.
