Certainly if it had landed in LA it would have done considerable damage but not on the lines of Deep Impact or Armageddon.

The Chelyabinsk meteor, just under 1500 injuries - none fatal, hit the Earth at 15 km/sec. It was estimated to be 20 metres in diameter and weighed as much as the Eiffel Tower.

A meteor that size at that speed would have made quite an impression had it impacted.

Hollywood's taken to making films of such events.

Similar in size to the Chelyabinsk meteor of 15 Feb 2013, it was hardly going to cause mass extinction of species. At 30% closer than the moon it was never going to hit the Earth and even at 99% closer would not have hit.

Sightings of it would depend on where in the world you are.

Previous meteor collisions have left giant craters.

It's hopefully not going to be close enough to have any affects on the Earth :-S

Well I did see the Hale-Bopp even before it had been announced on the news, so I guess so!

Dear All

Hello

In the fourth 'close shave' of the year, an asteroid will fly between the Earth and the moon tonight, only days after its discovery.

Named asteroid 2017 BS32 - the space rock is believed to be between 11 and 25 metres (36 to 82 feet), or around the size of a double decker bus.

It will pass closest to Earth at 20:23, coming twice as close to the Earth as the moon.

It is currently travelling at a speed, relative to Earth, of 11.56 km/s.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The asteroid was first spotted on January 30 and has an orbit that
stretches from inside Venus's plane all the way out to Mars.

On January 24, an asteroid roughly the size of a school bus flew by Earth,
coming 30 percent closer to our planet than the moon.

Just weeks before that incident, an asteroid as big as a 10-story building
passed by Earth at a distance half that of the moon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please wear hard hats :-)

and in the words quoted from the TV series "Hill St Blues".........................

"let's be careful out there. :-S

Take gentle care
With best wishes
Love Elizabeth, EOS
xx
