Heavy snow, blizzards, freezing gales and lethal ice sheets threaten to plunge the nation into the most severe winter lockdown for six years.

Freak changes in the upper atmosphere threaten to displace the Polar Vortex – a pool of cold air which circulates the North Pole and Siberia – dragging freezing, snow-laden air across the UK.

Despite the milder, stormier weather over the next couple of days forecasters warn to brace for a dramatic change to bitter conditions.

Thermometers are tipped to hit -10C (14F) in the north by the end of next week with the south plummeting to around -3C (26.6F).

Experts warn to brace for a shock to the system after a relatively calm winter so far which brought a brief burst of snowy weather at the start of January.

They say the next blast will whip up crippling blizzards and feet-deep snowdrifts grinding the country to a standstill until March.

we've got the Polar outflow right now

Cold temperatures since last Wednesday

Snow started Thursday night, traffic in many places at a complete standstill, schools closed

More snow still to come

I have about 15 cm of snow at my house right now, and might get another 10 cm or so overnight

We had a freeze that lasted about 6 weeks from about December 5 to Jan 15 ....... the longest we've had for over 30 years. Now we have another one, breaking all records for snowfalls on "this" date (whatever "this" date is!).

.................

and we're supposed to be the Banana Belt of Canada!

Heard that this evening, and thought of you AnnC :-D

One of the posters on our local on-line newspaper is a meteorologist. When discussing the OTT reporting about the then imminent Storm Doris, he said 'Wait until the Nationals hear about the Scandinavian weather front'.

Yep, Nathan Rao in the Express.

TBH, the met office are hinting that there could be colder weather for the next week or so but are not confident after that.
