Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 16 Feb 2017 07:53

It was a problem for my hubby too

He needed the door fully open in order to get in and out of the car and for me too stand outside to assist him .
In the disabled spaces it was ok but the ordinary ones were a no no sometimes for him.

It's not just for the folks with mobity problems either . Last week when I went shopping at the local mall the parking was chocka ,I had to drive round twice to get a space and then it was one I hate parking in i.e. next to one of the support pillars .

So I got in and was parked very straight which I was chuffed about as it was awkward. Went and did my shopping and came back to the car and some silly bee had parked so close to my passenger side they had put their side mirror in, goodness knows how they got out ,they must have climbed to the passenger side as the cars were only my wing mirror apart

So very carefully I started to reverse out only to find I had no room I had to drive in forward again and angle slightly to my right.Coming out I had to stop and put the drivers wing mirror in and very carefully and slowly carry on reversing

Yep , I heard a scrape !!!! Caught the drivers side wheel arch and taken the paint off for about 2 inches

Bee annoying because I was hemmed in by some bad parking and avoided coming in contact with their car only to damage mine .

Going to cost me to get it fixed :-( :-\

One aspect is that cars are getting wider as features such as side air bags are added and to aid stability on cornering.
(I think also to accomodate wider seats as the population "expands") Lol.

My OH drives a 3 door car and I won't use it , especially if it's windy

The doors are really wide and I.M.O there is a design fault,
There is no grab handle on the inside.

Open the door in windy weather and it bursts fully open with no way to stop it or even pull it back.

OH, has the longest arms in the world and can catch it .

I am not diabled but do have a back problem. The problem with our main car is it is two door and it is always difficult to get into in car parks thata re narrow. I did read that is why you see some people double parked across the centre of two, to preserve space either side. :-D

Parking spaces seem to be getting narrower and narrower. In some places it would be impossible to leave enough space for access and still park.

I'm fed up with squeezing in and out of the car. Ironically the worst place is the hospital car park.

I saw this on one of my disability pages and thought it may be useful.

How many of us have returned to our car and found that a twit had parked really close to either the disabled driver's door or the disabled passenger door?

It's rarely a problem in a designated parking bay but when all that's available is a 'normal' width bay it's a nightmare.

When shopping OH packs up the shopping and I return to sit in the car, well that's what I hoped to do. Car which had parked after us now stops me opening my door to any meaningful extent. This happens quite frequently.
