That was quite common then. Very sad.

People who had depression, or were distressed having been bereaved.
Deaf people, women with hormonal imbalances, all sorts of people who should not have been in there, but they didn't know how to treat them.

Thank Goodness it's not like that today :-)

I'm off now.
Night Night Fly <3 :-D <3

One of my ggg grandfathers was in an Asylum he had Epilepsy :-)

No she was hospitalised for at least 5 years before that. But he had been ill, cos the notes said he was in delicate health.

They married in Malta, where he was chief clerk at the Electric Telegraph Office. Which is interesting cos my Great Grandfather (his nephew) did the same job in Persia.

She was born in France to an English Consulate family, so it makes me wonder if she had caught some kind of foreign virus or something that affected her brain

Maybe she could not cope when her husband died :-(

JemimaFawr Report 23 Feb 2017 19:55

Yes, the longer she was in there, the worse her notes became. Even accusing the doctors of rape :-0 :-0 :-0

I found an 1881 Census for an Asylum. I wasn't totally sure it was her, because there were some inaccuracies, and I had nothing else to suggest that this could be her. Now I am inclined to think it is.

Her husband died in 1879. She died in 1890. Her sister was her next of kin on the death duties register.

It's very interesting reading! :-D

She was only 37ish, so it wasn't to do with menopausal stuff. It doesn't sound like depression or similar. She thought she was Queen of the Spirits able to kill or cure!

Queen of the May too.

She accused the maid of poisoning her husband.
She locked her up from 4 until 11 when her husband (my 2x Great Grandfather's younger brother) released her. She Quit :-D :-D :-D

Then she was putting "homeopathic remedies" in his food

:-D

We have them Fly. He has Dissociative Non-Epilepsy Attack Disorder.

It is very hard to deal with. He will have to go to Cognitive Therapy, as that is the only way it can be treated.

He also has to learn to live with it. It was very upsetting to see how distressed he is. He has no life. He's not even going to be able to go swimming on holiday.

He has a Care Worker who is going to try to get them a 2 bedroom bungalow.
