Well Barbra, there was a character in Rawhide called Rowdy Yates played by a young Clint Eastwood He went to Spain and made a succession of spaghetti westerns.

I rarely got to see Rawhide as it clashed with the midweek Grandstand.

How about Laramie with John Smith and Robert Fuller ( <3 <3). I think Robert fuller went on to become a doctor in some other series.

OK, at the time, I think that we all wanted the cowboys to beat the Indians,???

but looking back, it was glorifying the oppression/genocide by the whites on the natives........

Bob come on .it was TV many of the westerns were about cattle ranchers against each other .taking land & stealing stock from the Ranges .. :-D

I liked Rawhide, Bonanza. OH likes Walker Texas Ranger tho a bit odd in French.

It is still poss. to see old Western series and movies via the Internet. If your TV does not have built in Internet there are several gadgets which will hook into an hdmi port and provide the functionality.

the western both in series and movie formats is an important C20 art form which has survived into the C21. I share Barbra's enthusiasm.

Those dead eye Dicks with their revolver shooting to the heart or between the eyes ?
In reality they couldn't hit a bar door.

Bonanza's Little Joe became a successful producer. Little House on the Prairie

The hired gun in Palladin went on to make films. Was shot by John Wayne in The Shootist

Rawhide's Eric Fleming drowned whilst shooting a movie just after he left Rawhide.

I liked Laramie - anyone remember composer Hoagy Carmichael as Jonsey?

If you don't know the name perhaps the songs such as Stardust, Georgia On My Mind and Lazybones amongst his hits.

The Lone Ranger cracks me up - have seen some reruns of it and they are hysterical!!! Yet, at the time we loved the series

I used to watch Wagon Train when I was very young.

I loved to pick out the theme tune on the piano with one finger when I was about 5 years old! :-D

An intellectual is somebody who can listen to the 'William Tell Overture' and not think of the Lone Ranger.

Robin Hood lost his bow,

so they sent for Ivanhoe.

Ivanhoe was having tea.

So they sent for Laramie,

Laramie had gone for a walk,

So they sent for Tomahawk.

Am I a true Intellectual? You decide!

I remember a short lived series called The Chisholms, about a family who set off in wagons on the California trail. One of the sons was played by Ben Murphy of Alias Smith and Jones, and he ended up married to a native American woman.

James Gardner as Brett Maverick was popular.

James Arnes as Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke

I'm with Bob in regard to westerns on the big screen at the cinema. They certainly instilled a fear and dislike of 'Indians' in me as a young child. Racist and so wrong, I'm glad most of us have become enlightened.
From what little I remember about television 'cowboy' series, they just fought among themselves didn't they?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 5 Mar 2017 19:28

and they wore big hats - if you're gonna fight, don a big hat!!!
