Hello Elizabeth, nice to see you. I hope you are well too.

I thought the images on the cliffs were very special and imaginative, and really appropriate.

Dear Purple and All

Hello

Hope you are all well.

I especially liked the image of Dame Vera projected onto the background of the white cliffs of Dover.

In 2000, Dame Vera was named as one of the most inspirational people of the 20th century as she epitomised the spirit and the quality of providing continuity
in times of war and great hardship.

Take gentle care
With very best wishes
Love Elizabeth, EOS
xx

I loved the fact that neither Vera nor her daughter were 'posh' or snooty, you could sometimes hear the old accents in Vera's speech, she hasn't forgotten her roots, bless her.

I should think all the memorabilia would fill a small museum, and how lovely that it must strengthen this wonderful lady's memories for her.

I am sure she has enjoyed a happy day, and hope she will have more good years with her loved ones and friends

Gwyn, did we discover the coincidence with our Dads on our walk in Norfolk after Jules' wedding? I still remember walking round the town with you and chatting as we went. Btw, the daphne is flowering well as usual, always brings you to mind. It has a lovely perfume, quite citrussy and fresh

Dad was in Burma too.

I think he may have seen Dame Vera there.

I hope she has a wonderful 100th birthday. She really did cheer so many people in the dark days of the war.

We'll Meet Again

We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.
Keep smiling through,
Just like you always do,
Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds, far away.
So will you please say hello,
To the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long,
They'll be happy to know that as you saw me go
I was singing this song.
We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.

Such a beautiful song.........it must have been such a morale booster for the troops in WW2.

If only it were true. :-(

Hilary, I keep meaning to get Dad's war records. I think I have to send his death certificate, which my brother has, and I think there is a £30 charge? Dad died in 1990. Had lung cancer not beaten him and he was still alive he would 106 now, bless him.

We really enjoyed the programme. Dame Vera and her daughter seem to have kept absolutely loads of memorabillia - we kept wondering what was going to come out of the cupboard next, lol. Some of it will be worth a fortune.

Remember her programmes on the BBC, must have been late 1950s or just into the 60s with the George Mitchell Singers.

Dame Vera meant so much to those who went through WW 2. She went to the soldiers to entertain them. She must have been such a morale booster to the troops at the sharp end.

Happy Birthday for Monday.

Yes I watched it & it was lovely. She is still a remarkable lady for her age. Liz, why don't you see if you can get your dad's service records. You can apply if you are researching, not sure how long your dad passed away, have a look at the gov. website www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview, luckily I got my dad & father in law to apply for theirs before they died.
Happy bithday Vera :-)

Did anyone watch the documentary about her life, on bbc 2, last evening? It is being repeated on Tuesday, very late evening. It was made to celebrate Dame Vera's 100th birthday, on Monday 20th March.

She is a remarkable lady for her age and I hope she will be around for several more years, with her daughter Virginia. I think she has a new album out.

I really enjoyed it and was very interested to see that she visited Burma to entertain troops in the jungle. My late Dad was posted there for some of his Army service so I was searching the pictures of the troops in case I could spot him, luckily I had recorded it so could freeze those bits. I didn't see him - how I wished I could just ring him and ask if he was there at that particular time. He served in several different places, Burma, Egypt, and Palestine but I don't know in what order.
