Difficult to imagine but here in Kent it's sunny and 11 c

Very settled and feels very spring like

Have the lounge door open so the cat can come and go into the back garden

He is wondering why he can come and go

Glad you are now all up and running

We take it as a matter of course when all is running ok and when problems start you think bee thing cos it's been serviced etc

Sadly things have shelf lives ,including us lol!!, and wear and tear cause breakdowns which are annoying.

:-D

Our boiler and and all water is on a maintenance contract... Thank Goodness or the bill would be huge.

The 8yr old boiler is now almost new again.
There were only 2 major parts that didn't burn out on Sunday and didn't need to be replaced.
Both engineers, one from Scottish Gas and the other from Worcester Bosch firmly lay the blame on the person who serviced it a year ago.

This year's annual service was booked for TODAY!

GlasgowLass Report 21 Mar 2017 12:50

It took another 3 major parts but we finally have a working boiler!
Snow is disappearing fast.

Amokavid,
I hope you daughter will be OK
My OH also works in Glasgow.
He left just after 7.30 am and arrived at work at 9.15.

Both heating engineers had to find alternative routes to get here today as the EK expressway was at a standstill.
Snow wasn't unexpected, it was forecast yet SLC still can't get their act together.

Woolly jumpers anybody?
I have survived plenty of bitter cold winters without the benefits of central heating.
People are so nesh - how many had chs in Midlothian 1960? Life went on.
Electrical fan heaters are wildly expensive and inefficient tho the up front cost is low. Rads driven off portable propane gas bottles are much better tho good ventilation is essential. I have also used halogen heaters on construction sites.

Modern condensing boilers are more energy efficent than the regular type which are no longer legal new/replacement. However they Don t last anywhere near the 20 yrs of the old type. 7 years is typical.

The most common breakdown is for the condensate water pipe to freeze. Few installers take the measures to prevent this.

Any house in the UK can be insulated enough to keep daytime int temp over 14 C. Scandinavia and Germany have far better domestic insulation / heat storage than the UK - saves them a fortune!

You poor soul. It really would be a good idea to get at least one cheap fan heater as a back up.

Our CH boiler packed up just after Christmas one year. Of course, all the CH firms were on an extended break. We did manage to get one to come out after a week, but turned him away at the door as he didn't have his 'gas safe' card, or what ever its called, with him.

In the end it took 4 weeks before we had a working boiler, and about 4 days before the house warmed up properly.

In one respect we were lucky as we'd resisted suggestions to do away with the immersion heater - which we rarely use in normal circumstances - and do have a gas fire in the main living room. Even so, the rest of the house was perishing!

Our central heating broke down just as hubby came home from hospital in oct 2015

Had to move his bed around so it was away from the hole in the wall gas fire

Thankfully with the internal doors all open it warmed up the house
Central heating is a stand alone warm air system so nothing else was affected

Our ch engineer got to us the next day as an emergency call out ,had to get the part needed and cane back two days later to fix it

Thank goodness we have the fire as don't have any fan heaters

:-)

Poor you. I hate being cold. When our heating was off for a couple of days I kept going into town to warm up in the shops, or I invited myself to coffee with friends, but I didn't have to contend with snow as well.

Like Ann we have got some small fan heaters and they take the chill off the room very quickly. It's worth getting a couple of cheap ones for emergency use. I bought one for £7.50 in Tesco's a couple of years ago and it works just as well as the more expensive ones.

Hope you get your heat back soon.

AnninGlos Report 21 Mar 2017 09:48

Had that happen to us one January, it is not just the heating but not having hot water as well, the pipes then get cold. We now have a couple of heaters we can use if it happens again.

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 21 Mar 2017 09:03

we don't own any heaters but if it doesn't get fixed this morning, I am going out to buy some!

Can hardly move with all the layers of clothes that I''m wearing. LOL

AnninGlos Report 21 Mar 2017 08:53

GlasgowLass Report 21 Mar 2017 08:50

We have very heavy snow in our neck of the woods.
It's quite deep extremely cold.

Our annual service for the gas boiler was due today but, sods law, the boiler broke down at the weekend
The gas engineer came out early Sunday morning, located a faulty part and replaced it.
He turned the boiler on and it more or less blew up !
Scorched, burned and melted bits of boiler were now hanging out of it

He and a colleague spent half of yesterday re buliding it with dozens of new parts but it still doesn't work,
The heating part of it has been restored but there is no hot water.

We can't turn it on because they think the water issue caused the fault in the first instance and it could blow again

Today is Day 3 without heating and hot water!
An engineer from the boiler manufacturer is coming out today with the gas serviceman.

The house is like an ice cave and the snow just keeps falling!

I hope they get is sorted today or I will freeze to death
