A decent hair cut would not have gone amiss

"It's not mythology that man is always remembered for his scruffy look" ....not by me.
I tend to remember what people say rather than what they look like.

Appearance isn't really relevant in the short or long term is it? If it were, half the intelligent or creative men and women the world has produced would be remembered for their looks or lack of them rather than their inventions, theories, contributions... lets hear it for the scruffy ones with 'bite' rather than the pristine perfect who look as if they have never done a days work in their life ;-)

Again I wasn't commenting on his views.......but like it or not he is remembered for his looks. Rollo assumed I was saying he wore a donkey jacket.
As for the Queen liking his jacket, she's also well known for wanting to save money and dress down somewhat when the occasion allows...

I wasn't commenting on his views either. I was stating my own, ie that appearance is not the first or last thing I remember about people, it is what they say or do.

I can't of course speak for those who remember Einstein for his hair or Hitler for his moustache. Trump could cut his hair and he would still be Trump wouldn't he?

Obviously I'm a more shallow thinker as I can't help but think of him as scruffy same with Einstein....and no I'm not a fashion queen far from it.

Obviously me too Caroline. I am frequently scruffy indoors but always scrub up well to go out :-D

Well that's the good thing about boards like this isn't it? I don't know, for instance, whether you are a 30 something fashion queen or a white haired granny or whether Rollo is built along the lines of a Greek god or a Hobbit :-)

Without seeing the person, whether they are young/old, thin/fat, scruffy/neat you can only guess at what they might look like (if you are so inclined) or just read what they say, how they respond and draw your own conclusions not biased by their appearance :-)

I think I can safely say Rollo is not a thirty something fashion guru.....

Tolkien lived in Bournemouth of all places where he is not remembered for his sharp dressing.
Osbourn, Cameron and May all spend a fortune on their getup. May's penchant for leather trousers is odd considering her determination to expand trade with India.

Labour has declared that a salary of £ 70 K makes you rich if not idle. If only... no wonder they poll so badly.

Haven't they given up the idea of expanding trade with India after they found out that the price would be allowing freedom of movement between the UK and India.

Oh they are going to vote, Dermot, they've made that very clear. But their reasons are based on ignorance of the actual policies of the parties we have to choose from. Scary stuff.

I think you'll find Tolkien spent most of his life in Birmingham.
He spent quite a lot of his working life in Oxford, as he was a lecturer there,
and only moved to Bournemouth in his latter years, after his retirement - at the insistence of his wife.
After her death he moved back to Oxford - where both he and his wife are buried.

To be fair anyone in those days not dressing smartly would stand out in the crowd in Bournemouth I would guess.......

Not really surprised at a snap election being called, after all May was appointed leader when Cameron slid off, so has not actually been elected in the true sense. Also she (and many of us) realise that Brexit is likely to take more than 2 years to sort out - the 29 April thing Rollo mentioned is more an EU 'manifesto' - the points / issues it intends (initially) to address. Like everything else along these lines this will change.
I don't see the relevance of mentioning how much someone pays for their clothing or accessories, Rollo? I've paid £400 for spectacles in the past, because what I needed is what they cost then, even though I was nowhere near being on a wage equivalent to an MP. As for Corbyn's £70K = Rich.....well I suppose if you are single you will be 'comfortable', but if you are married and 2-3 kids and mortgage then not quite as 'rich' as intimated - plus to get that money you'd have to be living and working in the 'right area' for such - he did of course omit to mention his wage......
Corbyn is also not a 'Socialist' - he is very much anti-establishment and a well documented supporter of various terrorist groups, including the IRA. He's also not alone in that in todays Labour Party.
Lib Dems - If they could work out which direction is forward they may do better.
UKIP - could be a surprise in some constituencies though far off being an 'opposition'.
The rest, including Independents who may also pull a few surprises, are just the rest.
A Corbyn-led Government in UK would have Putin rubbing his hands in glee and me considering who do I know that would look best in a Guy Fawkes outfit. Suggestions?

To earn £70k- more twice the 'average' pay - of course you'd be well off!!
Don't forget, to get that 'average' pay, the salary of bankers and other tax dodgers is taken into account, so although the 'average' wage is £27,600, MOST people are earning much less than that.

The average statistic (mean) is just that it says nothing about the distribution within the population of interest the median stat will give the 50% value. In normally distributed populations the median is close to the mean. UK income is highly skewed.

If people realised just how much then Corbyn's prospects would be better.

In any case by far the maj of those earning over £ 100 K take steps designed to reduce taxable income. It is a game of Fox and rabbit with the taxman currently in front. Result the high end London property market is in trouble and a lot of high net worth people are leaving taking their jobs and capital with them.

May is going to make the end of the Ecj re UK matters, immigration and payments mainifesto commitments. The EU on 29 April will release a revised position paper seriously hardening their line.

so we will have a Mexican standoff exactly what May claims she wants to avoid using the deux ex machina of a general election.

I suppose that with any luck the whole thing will sit and stew until the Germans have a new govt end of this year. The new year could start with quite a bang.
