From the census I have found for this man. I believe he was born in rawcliffe Yorkshire. I am trying to find the registration information so i can order his birth certificate. Here lies the problem. This was the only one I could find

James Gray GRO Reference: 1858 D Quarter in GLANFORD BRIGG Volume 07A Page 565 except the mothers maiden name was Chapman. (This is John's brother son).

I know his parents were John and hannah (nee walker) Gray which means the above entry is incorrect. I cannot see any other possabilities. So can someone take a look and see if they can find a possible entry for me.

It's possible his birth wasn't registered not everyone was pre 1875 when it became a legal requirement

Have you tried FreeBMD for his birth

Edit the gro site doesn't find a birth so it looks like he wasn't registered

People held more store in having the child baptised rather than legally registered
