I was thrown out of the boy scouts ostensibly for drinking beer but actually for having in my possession a copy of a D H Lawrence novel. I cried for a week of course.

I am sorry Maggie could not make it in the lush pastures of south Hampshire. We lived in Hamble for a couple of years. The most challenging thing was the traffic in and out of Winchester. Despite the M3 park n ride and knocking down car parks that is much the same. God Begot house is now a pizza take away which tells you a lot about the city's regard for its heritage.

There are of course worse places Eldrick is well travelled so he will tell you about it when he addresses parliament with his golfing buddy D Trump.

Fwiw I have been posting here only from a smartphone for months. I have no idea how to copy and paste with Firefox on Android nougat.

Yes but can I move in with you so to speak ?? :-D :-D

:-D :-D :-D :-D Eldrick!!

Caroline, not a 'wonder woman', I/we just did it, because it was the situation!!

It was only when 'mansplained', I sat and thought about what I'd done. :-D :-D

I've even impressed myself :-D

AND, I was the only one who didn't get 'splashback' - not once - when emptying the bucket!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D (I bet they don't teach you how to do that in the Scouts!)

I know what you mean, Maggie. When me and Ray Mears lived in the Amazon jungle for a year, I learned how to make my own shoes from dried out Capybara droppings, clothes from the leaves of the Kapok tree and lived on a diet of hairy caterpillars and char grilled scarlet macaw burgers. However - we lit our fires with....matches. You should see all the badges we got from the local tribal chief! My favourite is the 'charging your laptop from an electric eel proficiency' badge, proudly worn on my lapel to this day. Invaluable experience.

I got kicked out of the boy scouts for sneaking whisky into the camp and wearing long trousers.

Oh and to carry on the sideways slant this took....so long and thanks for all the fish

Caroline

Caroline Report 23 May 2017 18:32

I'm not half bad when it comes to looking out for myself but I'd still like to move in with Maggie please ? Nothing funny just she's more of a wonder woman than I am.....I'll leave the teenagers on their own after all they already know everything anyway :-D

*sigh* I explain about the difference between peat bogs and peat seams and STILL it's 'mansplained'!!

It's all very well 'learning' how to 'survive' in the scouts - but try living without a bath/shower, electricity, gas etc for more than a weeks 'jolly' - try 3 years.
I've done it - true at that time I didn't have to kill my own food, apart from the fish I caught, but I have, at a different time, bred ducks, killed and eaten them.
Did you do that in the scouts?
I've knitted and sewn my own clothes, upholstered furniture, woven rugs, used to fix the old Morris, grown food, dug peat, removed my own ticks and leeches, made wine from scratch, made jam, emptied many a 'bucket' when we didn't have a toilet - and all without being in an organised 'club'!!.

But I'll leave it up to Rolo to explain, as he's been a Boy Scout and survived for a week. Oh - and I'm just a 'wimmin' type person.

Well, filtering out the background noise and feeble attempts to quote HHGTTG, that really doesn't day much. In fact, as usual, nothing. Far better to stick to copying and pasting the result of google searches - at least they are readable, although usually wrong.

You seem to think that I want to pay money to read this drivel? Are you serious, man? Really? lol No, you cannot be. I like a decent debate and exchange of views, but I like to choose my debating company and I'm afraid you don't meet the required standard. Which is a shame, because my pet turtle does.

Anyway, I shall enjoy my tea with my friend the Lord Chief Justice, who mentioned you kindly when I was having a beer with him last week. Actually, no, he didn't. I made that up. Something you will be familiar with.

Au revoir et à l'adieu, mon petit Walter

Yes but I didn't mention that the asteroid menace can only be defeated by a strong and stable leader with a plan (secret) nor that the other plan unchanged was for a strong and stable leader who could deal with the desolation.

Wales, Scotland and NI of course don't want anything of it believing in their own nostrums such as haggis shelters, large red dragons and Brian Boru.

The French believe that the rosbifs will sink capsized by improbability. Arthur Dent also believes this but his friend Zaphod Beeblebrox says that has already happened. The UK is a mirage controlled by an alliance of the nailbar and hairdressers union and the Vogons. They will pay Brussels £42 mn in Monopoly money before brexiting to Barnard's star.

There he goes again. Spam, spam more spam and brexit.

This thread will vanish later today cos Eldricks salary minding the car park at Cern is not enough to pay his subs. Maybe he could crowd fund the subs and a haircut.

Toodle doo then.

Fwiw I strongly detest T May. I am not sure if it is her wardrobe grating voice or the effort of keeping up with her revolving door decision making.

I only watched the Andrew Neil interview after the event. Now I realise she is in the black comedy business and not to be missed.

And the cat came back the very next day.

Sigh.

Yes, a politician in the mould of your beloved Teresa :) Take a topic, twist it round then answer your own questions. I'd vote for you! Although...maybe not if there was another candidate wearing white rabbit outfit.

All I can say is that you haven't grasped the OP. Not much I can do about that, sadly. Everyone else seems to have managed perfectly well.

I think this thread is dead now. Not to worry, I wont be able to see it after tonight

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 May 2017 16:56

I did.

Do you really expect such posts to be taken seriously?
You say you are against religions but survivalism with its references such as Stephen King's "the Stand" is like a religious sect including the demand for respect.

Nobody has any real idea what an asteroid strike might do. The most risky object has a potential collusion in 800 years time. By then there will probably be technology to deal with it.

I deliberately avoided the absurd Maslow pyramid theory which has no evidence to support it. It has often been used in business and politics for truly dreadful decisions. From a high point in the 1980s sfaik it has been junked in real life but I have no idea if the shrinks still use it. Hopefully not.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 23 May 2017 16:31

You still haven't grasped the topic, have you. Might be worth having a read of the OP again. I tried writing it slowly.

Good politics, though. Change the question into a discussion that you are more comfortable with.

Never mind, its my last day today so I don't really care.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 May 2017 16:12

Ok the asteroid came out of nowhere in the northern spring and hit Dakota. NASA wasn't looking cos Trump had diverted all its efforts to a mini robot shuttle and Mars.
At half a mile the damage was bad but survivable.

It was dark for a week and even now in the fall sunlight is down 50 %. Although a lot of trees and plants have hung on crops failed world wide. Food wars erupted world wide. The UK, brexited, with only a few weeks stored food supply is especially hit. The EU has closed the Channel ports. Mayhem is waving her nukes about. USA discloses that they will only arm with a key under US control.

Still sure what you are going to eat?

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 23 May 2017 15:29

I assume you mean Sellafield, WIndscale is decommissioned. Not a lot would happen, depending on if they were damaged or abandoned.

If abandoned with no personnel to keep them running, the automatic procedures would just shut things down. Then that's it. Even if damaged, a nuclear plant can't explode - you need weapons grade material for that and the process in a reactor is different to a bomb. So the worst case scenario would be a runaway process releasing heat energy and causing fires. There would be an initial spread of radioactive dust from the smoke, but this would soon disperse and have little effect. There would probably be groundwater contamination and anyone in the immediate vicinity could suffer radioactive poisoning, but they would have to be relatively close. Not one person died from radiation exposure at Fukushima.

So all in all, yes, there would be an effect, but nothing like the catastrophic scenarios that most people would imagine. We live with radiation all the time - its only the high energy photons that are dangerous.

Rambling Report 23 May 2017 15:29

Oh yes I'd be the first to be knocked off,not nec' because of temperament but because of age and disability, there is no way I could run lol but then I wouldn't want to be around anyway in the world as described ( I have enough trouble just being around in this one :-) )

"Most people cannot even fix basic faults with their car or house or computer or repair minor damage to clothes. Without supermarkets they would not be able to tell which plants were safe to eat. How many people know how to catch, kill and butcher an animal? How to grow barley and wheat and make bread? The list of essential skills which are all but forgotten is endless."

well of those I can't fix a car which wouldn't be a problem in the circumstances:-)

I do know fairly well what plants are safe to eat (though I might avoid fungi!) and which I could offer to those who don't know...should I wish to bump them off :-)

Yes, the strongest, fittest and craftiest would survive and women would be constantly pregnant, by choice or more likely not, with raping and pillaging the order of the day with tribal skirmishes and fighting! With lawlessness, any shelter you made, crops you grew, animals or possessions you still had would be stolen by those who were stronger than you.

It would certainly strengthen the human race as those who have difficulty reproducing or giving birth without medical intervention or aid wouldn't be producing offspring who would inherit the same difficulties. The same with some diseases where life with medication enables maturity and reproduction to pass on the same susceptibility or genetic faults to the next generation. The severely mentally ill would be free, as would any kind of criminal that survived.

I think if I had to run and kill or trap animals I would become a vegetarian PDQ apart from eggs and fish! I imagine an existence of looking over my shoulder and being wary and suspicious of anyone I didn't know.

I wonder how much knowledge, much of which would be redundant living in those times, would survive? No computers or even glasses to read stuff if you need them.

Would recovery be quicker with knowledge we already have, than advancement was in the past, or would we really be almost starting from scratch again? Is present day man brighter than those ancestors from ancient times, or were they stronger, with better immunity and more resilient?
