Two days ago there was a lot of activity on my pc's hard drive. As expected, when I signed out there was a lot of system updating carried out. It carried on yesterday when I switched on. (That took enough time for me to go and make myself a cup of tea). And again this morning.

Today when I opened my email account I noticed the following message in the adverts box:-

(hi) Hello! Skype here. We'd like to send you tips and hints so you can do more with Skype every day. We'd also like to tell you about other Microsoft products and services that we think you might enjoy. If you'd rather not receive these Skype bot messages, you can stop them at any time.
All messages will adhere to the Microsoft Services Agreement and the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Look who's on Skype! It's xxxxxx xxxxxx from your device's contact list. Click on a name to say hello (wave).

[ I copied as text, but the (hi) and (wave) were emoticons]

Well, I have never used Skype. And I don't have a camera on my pc. Though I know that Skype can also be used to make phone calls. And I am sure that this message has never displayed before.

The deleted name is a near neighbour. And my contacts list includes all the phone numbers. For many folk their mobile as well as their home numbers.

So Microsoft syphons off info. left, right and centre?

That's a bit creepy :-(
I don't have automatic updates, but a daily scan tells me what needs updating.
Most of the time, it's Skype, so I ignore it.

I find it strange that FB wants a phone number too.
They have an e-mail address - as far as I'm concerned, that's all they need.
I also don't like the way some shops ask for an e-mail address to 'send me a receipt'!
I just point out that there's one sticking out of the till - that will do me :-D

As you say maggie everyone wants to get hold of your email to bombard you with spam. The one that pees me off is having to register on a makers website to "validate your 1 year guarantee", cheeky b*****s! :-P

FB ask for all the details they think they can get, none of which you have to provide.

When I went in to the travel agent for euros last year, I was asked for my name and address, which I declined. She insisted that it is "the law", which I know damned well it isn't. When she wouldn't give me the euros without it, I gave my name as Mr Thomson, (I was in their branch) and the address of the branch that we were in. She accepted this and handed over the cash. Job done.
