OH fought his way through eventually only in the end being passed to the secretary, who obviously wasn't there because the receptionist then told him she was passing him to an answer phone. And we have heard nothing since.
Sue, normally I don't use the phone to the surgery as we have patient services so bookings can be made on line but this is a different situation. I will eventually end up going in to the surgery I am sure.
Von yes that is a good idea, might try that.

Ann
I feel for you. I could hardly hear on our house phone sometime but DIL used it recently and asked what was wrong with our phone because it was so quiet :-0

Now I have discovered the button that increases the sound it's much better :-D :-D :-D

I do agree about the option numbers but I usually press whichever number sounds like the one I might need. I never listen to the end ;-) ;-) ;-)

Before I got hearing aids, phone calls from companies in far off places, I:e India, used to make me cry, I just could not make out any conversation, and I am by no means a racist, I just have trouble with certain tones.

I joke with you about having your batteries in Ann but I do appreciate the problem and the hearing in my left ear is GOOD.

The problem with listening to numbers is there is no logic compared to words which we can quite often assume correctly.

I lose the will to live when presented with multiple numeric options, sometimes none of which bear any relation to my query/request.

You can ask to have contact preference added into your clinical notes, sometimes they actually read them

:-(

It isn't just a problem for those with hearing loss either is it? Too many don't speak clearly and slowly when giving out numbers and instructions over the phone and hold the phone away from their mouth or, if it's a mobile, are twisting their head about and losing the signal as they talk. I always repeat my number to ring if I want someone to return my call.

The telly is a problem too with muffled voices in some programs and it seems so many in programs these days have a strong accent of some kind, which I have no problem with if only they would speak more slowly and clearly!

It must be very disheartening Ann........ I have resorted to answering some at speed to see how they like it!! lol.

When hubby was in hospital as an emergency admission I gave my home phone number

Got a snotty call the next day from the doctor saying need to have a talk but have had to borrow someone's mobile to ring you as your phone doesn't accept withheld numbers .

Well, yes we had to put that in place to stop umpteen nuisance calls .

BUT why does a hospital withhold their number . Surely if you ring in and they have to reply then what's the problem :-(

I use patient services for making appointments which is great. But when they send out special appointments it is a 'donotreply' e mail with a phone number. Why can't they give an e mail address. Same with hospital appointments. e mail can be used but it is a second class service, youw ait ages for an appointment because they don't check e mails regularly.

Emma I can understand your OH's reluctance but I would be lost now without my aids. However they do sometimes make me feel frustrated and like a non person.

Yes Bob and travel announcements in the car too, I can never hear those, just as well I am not driving! T can hear perfectly well, two years older than me and excellent hearing.

My mother is over 90 and depends on her hearing aids.
For the phone she has a model with big buttons and a built in loud speaker. With the speaker on she can deal with phone number menus no trouble at all.
She also wins quite often at bingo. concentration?

I use email to communicate with the doctor thus avoiding problems of high blood pressure which using a phone brings on. My patience level is about the same as Peter Boyd (Waking the Dead).

Quite why the NHS will not use SMS I have no idea. Great for the hard of hearing.

Ann it must be so frustrating for you, my hearing is OK but even I
can't catch what they say at times.

My OH needs to get help for his hearing but won't see about it, daft I
know but he thinks it's not that bad, well it is because he asks me to
repeat what I and others say to him.

Hope you get new appointment sorted out soon.

yep same with traffic announcements and weather forecasts on the local radio,

they get into this "rhythm" of reading out the numbers to call, in a kind of of fluctuating sing song voice........dont they..........?

I can hear reasonably well with my two aids. However OH is out and I had an email notifying me of an appointment with my doctor for minor surgery in August (I was expecting to get an appointment but unfortunately and s**'s law I am away on that day so need to cancel the appointment. So, as OH is not here to phone for me I decided to do it. OK I could hear perfectly well until it got to the list of numbers to press for various things. She was talking so fast that I gave up and put the phone down.
