Thank you so much for your help all of you I will look into the site Gramps as I don't really want to be paying for two separate sites

"GRAMPS" is as good as any commercial offline program and better than most. It is free.

The big features of Ancestry are world wide coverage and a vast eclectic collection of databases but it comes at a price. The UI has been changed a lot to accomodate Americans who like time lines and tend to have as much as 100 years of multimedia. European reception has been less enthusiastic.

ancestry also has a very good Android app.

Why not. Many members on here, myself included, have their tree on Ancestry as well as other sites.

However if you decide to expand your research in the future, you will need to decide, at some stage, where to maintain your definitive or prime tree. I use a commercial tree program on my PC and upload to the websites I use periodically.

Thank you explaining that a gedcom is a data file not an image. I am not really up on computer stuff and jargon

Thank you for your help I have now downloaded family tree builder and it seems to work with that but what I actually wanted to do with it is put it on an ancestry one as I got a ancestry DNA kit for my birthday not sure how detailed or thorough it will be but thought I would upload a tree on that site as well what do you think would this be helpful or maybe just confusing.
Thank you in advance for your interest

GEDCOM is a data file, not an image of your tree. The tree you see on your screen is a 'graphical representation' of the data. You can open the file with Notepad (change from .txt to all files). But it will not tell you much. Herewith the first few lines of one of mine:-
0 HEAD
1 SOUR GRUExport
2 VERS 3.0.6171.29544
2 NAME Genes Reunited
2 CORP Genes Reunited Ltd
1 DATE 23 FEB 2017
2 TIME 15:21:47
1 FILE family tree.ged
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
1 CHAR ANSEL

GED's are used to transfer trees from one family history program to another.

What did you intend/expect to do with it?

Thank you for your help I found it in my email but after downloading it it says that I don't have a compatible program to open it

Its sent as an attachment to an email, which you then transfer into a family tree programme. The original tree isn't atlered in any way.
