Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 11 Jul 2017 06:05

When hubby passed I had to do some rearranging

We had virgin media for broadband and home phone but some years earlier we had got sky tv because it offered more of the type of programmes that hubby liked

He paid for the phone etc ,I paid for Sky as I was the one who got it put in

I decided to ditch sky and get a virgin media package that I could afford that suited me

Sky accepted the cancellation and asked for a reason and I told them hubby had passed away and I couldn't afford I now . OK sorry to see you go

Bloody people though have kept bothering me with phone calls with offers .
Have told em what don't you get in your head ,my husband has passed away and I can't afford it i, it's bad enough losing him without being constantly hassled

It got so bad I wouldn't answer the phone so they switched to using another telephone to ring me

I have had to put a block on the numbers on my home phone

They write to me now but the letters just go through the paper shredder without being opened

I have the toasting bags, you can get them in other places than Lakeland. They work really well for when you fancy a toastie. They don't seal the toastie, of course, and you need a toaster with a wide enough slot. I can get pannini rolls in mine if I squash them down a bit......

Can anyone remember the jaffle irons that made toasted sandwiches years ago when they were called jafflles?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jul 2017 22:22

someone years ago gave us toaster bags, bought from Lakeland (is that the right name??)

You made the sandwich, put in one of the bags and put into a toaster .................. I never used them 'cos we don't have that kind of sandwich.

Might have.

Don't know, don't care.

So you have Sky, broadband and wifi without needing to plug anything in or set passwords here and there.

Remarkable.

At the moment the debate goes rumbling on at home.

I make toasties in a George Foreman Grill.

Spread the outside of the sandwich with butter/ spread.
Fill and and wrap in greaseproof paper.
Place in the grilling machine at a medium temp.

No mess to clean up either.

I suspect this is how they would be done in a frying pan too !

Looking for the name of the contraption which mother-in-law used to have to make toasted sandwiches, I found this link, which tells one how to make them in a frying pan.

Multi purpose use things, that's what one needs in a kitchen........

I really could not be arsed with things you have to plug in or buy or have passwords for. I would sooner just not watch the tele.

I would miss the pause and rewind facility, great when some twerp knocks at the door or rings you up to chatter for hours just at the most interesting bit! ;-)

I use my Sky Now mainly for live test cricket which is not widely available in pubs mores the pity. If they do have cricket the sound will be turned down unless you have the good fortune of a landlord from the sub continent.

Thanks to the widespread use of Smartphones there are a lot fewer people lending a sky password :-(

FWIW I think Sky pricing is scandalous but then users have other options. I get by with Virgin M+ which used to be £ 8 mo. They have pushed me into an ug to TIVO with £20 activation fee but otherwise free for next 12 months! My kind of upgrade.

Of course Kodi is free but considered naughty by the media moguls. Watchdog has so far not named and shamed any Kodi supplier.

Sky subscribers are given/create a password so that they can access the site via the internet. Were you to cancel at renewal, ask around your friends & acquaintances. One of them might be willing to share their TV password with you.
Only 1 additional device can use it at any one time.

On the other hand, he might prefer to find a pub showing the match he wants to watch!

Have to admit, Sky has never appealed to me. :-(

I understand your liking the room left by the removal of a rarely used piece of equipment.
My rarely used microwave went out with a 'bang' last week.
I thought I'd give it a chance, and changed the fuse.
Once I'd done that, and turned it on, it made all the right noises, but the plate remained static.
Such was my 'love' for this thing, I didn't look any further into it's shortcomings - apart from fiddling with the wheels - and a friend took it to the dump on Friday.

I now have a long sweep of workspace :-D

Sky have a gadget called Now! It plugs into an hdmi socket on the TV. They are on eBay for about £20. Once registered Sky give out one day passes for Sports etc for £ 10. Occasional users can save a tidy sum.
The now pass can be used from any TV and is also valid on Smartphones which have video and wifi.

We have had Sky for a few years and I have never watched most of what is available and, what I do watch is on its third or fourth cycle now.

Sometimes he will watch something I don't want to watch and I will go off and do something else or he will watch football in the kitchen but I just don't like paying for a whole lot of programmes I don't want and more that I have seen three times already.

Maybe I should learn to read or something.

Summer is a rubbish time for TV, unless you enjoy watching 'sports'. Why not keep a diary for a few weeks, detailing who watched which channel/programme & when?

We got rid of our toasted sandwich maker years ago. It's easy enough to make one under the grill & it's simpler to clean.

Sharron

Sharron Report 10 Jul 2017 11:40

Yesterday OH made toasted sandwiches, something we have two or three times a year at most. He decided the sandwich toaster we have had for something approaching twenty years was finished because he couldn't get the sandwiches out easily, they were stuck on, so he chucked it away.

This pleased me because I never wanted a four holer anyway, it takes up as much room as a horse and cart in the cupboard. He wants to go go to Kenwood today and buy another one.

I like the room that is left and I don't you may be surprised to know that I don't want to spend money on something we rarely use as I think we could probably survive after a fashion without any toasted sandwiches at all. Cheese on toast is very similar.

Discussing, for want of a better word, this issue, brought us round to Sky tv. We have it, he pays for it, well I can't because all my pension goes on the rent and council tax, and I think it is a waste of money.

Neither of us watches any drama but we have to have hundreds of drama channels, I don't much like anything American. He does have Sky Sport which he watches about once a month and there is rarely anything on that is not a repeat. If I have enjoyed it I don't mind watching it again but would really like something new to watch.

He is desperately wanting carry on be parted from his money every month so he tries to persuade me that it is good value by telling me that I would not be able to watch my 'programmes about Hitler' without it.

So now you know, I am a tightfisted neo-Nazi!Even watching them, I know the outcome!
