We used to be able to access historic newspapers through the library service, free of charge. I don't seem to be able to find this on my local county council library site (Hampshire). Has it been hijacked by FindMyWallet and Cashreunited ?

Libraries always had to pay for the service - I think it was Gale Newspapers. Maybe they can't afford to any more.

Ah, Conservative cutbacks. Shame, I always seem to manage to pay my council tax.

You can go to the Newspaper Archives site (google it), and do a preview for free ............. if you see a reference that could be connected, you could either buy credits on there, or ask someone on here who has a sub to FMP or the Platinum level on here to do the final check for you

You could also do the preview look on GR without having the expensive sub ............. just go to search, and click on Newspapers

Platinum level doesn't have it on here, it's an add on still but someone might have it added on.

You can get free online access to most of the Gale collection if you join Lancashire Libraries.

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries-and-archives/libraries/join-a-library.aspx

Though I found articles on FMP that I can't find in the Gale collection.

I'm a member of Lancashire Library but don't live in Lancashire.

I can access the newspapers.

Same here :-D
Can't find Granny's 'misdemeanours' during the war in Lancashire Libraries, but found plenty on my gx2 uncle's train robbing attempt in 1851 :-D :-D

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 15 Jul 2017 21:41

So can I, but I don't think anybody outside Lancashire is allowed to join now.

Also, I think Gale newspapers are mainly C19th and FMP is better for anything later.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Jul 2017 21:44

Andysmum is correct ......

......... for several years, no-one living outside Lancashire has been able to join the library system.

If you joined before that, it seems that you can continue to access them

FMP carries newspapers from the 1700s as well as later than the the 1800s.

If you click on the link in my first post, it says there:
"Anyone residing in the UK may join Lancashire's library service, however our eBook downloads and access to subscription resources are limited to Lancashire residents."

If you then click on 'Digital Library' on the right, there are more details - see here:

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries-and-archives/libraries/digital-library.aspx

If you then scroll down to 'Reference Online' it says:
"*Please note that a few of these resources can only be accessed for free within Lancashire Archives, Libraries and Museums marked as *in library only."

Scroll down to newspapers - there is no asterix - therefore available to all :-D

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Jul 2017 23:13

I do know that several people tried to join Lancashire libraries from elsewhere in the UK 3 or 4 years ago, and it would not let them

so there are conflicting reports

WS

Love..."FindMyWallet and Cashreunited" :-D

I can certainly access The Times Digital Archive, London Gazette and Illustrated London News online through my own Library service.

I could also access the Gale service but that has been withdrawn :-( Probably as previously suggested for cost reasons.

Try looking for access through your County Library's 'e' information section....If they have it so labeled.
