Anyone speak Dutch!?

Victoria Report 18 Jul 2017 12:51

HI

I have been trying for many years to find out about my Great grandmother's line and there are numerous posts on here about her (Minnie Nelson).

All I know is she was born in Shanghai in 1873, and have a big gap in her history between her birth and her arrival in the UK in 1891 - I can trace her from this point forward.

I do know now from her marriage certificate that her father was called Andrew Nelson, he is down as deceased at the time of the marriage (1896), and was a master mariner.

This is my new target to try and find a bit out about her.

I have found a record of a death for an Andrew Nelson, but it is in Dutch, and I can't read the script well enough as a none native speaker to be able to use Google translate.

Can anyone help translate it?

I am clutching at straws but it may provide some clues.

Many thanks in advance.

Sheila

Where about did he die and what year? Was he born in Shanghai China?

Can you post links to the other threads in case they can tell us anything about her please and save us from duplicating information.

And where is the death record for Andrew to be found?

Hi

I dont know - the only details I have are from her marriage certificate which states he was a master mariner, and deceased at time of marriage in 1895/6.

A previous thread has thrown up his daughter Minnie has put herself down as Swedish on the 1911 census - she was def born in Shanghai and it normally says (B.S) after her which i have taken as British Subject. The curve ball now seen is the Swedish nationality on the 1911 census which could indicate her father was Swedish, in which case I can find 3 Swedish Andrew Nelson's in the UK census'!

So complicated!

If he was a mariner then it is possible he could have died on board ship anywhere, In addition if he was Swedish then it is also explains why I couldn't find him on any UK mariner lists.

This is the most recent which threw up loads if useful things to follow, so I certainly don't want people to be duplicating time and effort. I also have done extensive searches for Minnie although having said that this is a new one above from greyghost!

Everyone who looks seems to find a new snippet but I do want to make it clear th purpose of this post was simply to find someone to translate and not to re-search on my behalf (although anything additional is always appreciated)!

These are the other links so loads of stuff in here as well about both Minnie and Andrew.

I am clutching at straws with the Dutch thing in the hope it might mention a widower or daughter, as a way of confirming things maybe.

So where are the previous threads please.

Who did she marry and where?

Where is she in the 1901/1911 census under what name?

where is the Dutch record you have found?

EDIT - posted at same time as your list of threads, let's see if there are any answers there.

Greyghost - is the passenger list for State of Nebraska available do you know and if so where would i go to find it. Happy to pay for it if needs be. I am curious to see who she travelled with (if anyone).

Thanks

In one of your previous threads you say she appeared on the 1891 census with an aunt. So the passenger list above is unlikely to be her as it's arrival is July after the census was taken.

As you have so many posts, perhaps you could consolidate the findings in to one place as it really is a pain going back and forwards to previous threads - I thought from your OP the previous threads were someone else's.

PS, I will be off-line for the next 4-5 hours as I am going to be travelling for work so please don't think I am being rude if I don't respond immediately!

HI Greyghost

As I said, yes there are multiple threads and a lot of info, I am simply clutching at straws with the Dutch info (which I found on ancestry and have saved to my shoebox, not sure how to post it on here as it is an image).

The initial purpose of this thread was to find someone who might be able to translate it and it might, just might mention a wife or daughter left behind?

As a very quick summary

Minnie Nelson, b1873 Shanghai
Married 1895 to Thomas Rogers Evans in Wales, appears on the 1901, 1911 census as Minnie Evans, lots of ships passages for her after 1896 as Minnie Evans with 3 children Ifor (my grandfather), Margaret and Gwen.

Andrew Nelson is known as her father from her marriage certificate, all it states is deceased and master mariner on the certificate,

I would love to know her parents, but as can be seen from previous threads there is lots of information post her arrival in Wales and nothing between 1873-1891 of her early life or family.

Please, please dont worry too much about searching for her as I really dont want to waste people's time.

My main searches now are on finding
Andrew Nelson
Possible marriages for Andrew Nelson
Birth record for Minnie
Passage from Shanghai to Wales before 1891.

Thanks so much for answering the above.

If you're confident you can decipher the writing, have you tried using one of the online translation sites?

If you don't have any luck here for a translation then you could try.....

Have you tried cutting and pasting into word, then cutting and pasting into Google Translate?
