What happens when you hold your mouse over MY avatar???

You've just been looking at your own .... that's why you can see Update Profile.

If you look at mine, your should see:-

Hi Sylvia -
If I hold the mouse over the avatar I get the
Member Since July 2005,
number of posts 5337 and as you say
the Update profile.

If I click on update profile it just takes me to the Personal details page - no magic member number.

Not that it matters really............. it's just annoying !! And probably something very simple to match my mind.

greyghost ..............

what happens if you hold your mouse over the avatar??

For me, that causes a hidden feature to appear .................

eg, for me ........

I also get a little box to click on "Update Profile"

I can see the first two items under your avatar, but NOT the Update Profile box

IGP ..............

no apparent technical staff dedicated to GR.

seemingly only one person designated to respond to emails ........ at least, all mails seem to have the same signature as sender

You really expect something to be done now?????

Even when they did have more staff, other things seemed to take precedence over record of member activity.

Just as FMP is the main site now, while GR is run down until we all quit, and they can see "we're closing the site".

Mind you, member activity would only show that I, for example, am on site .......... and I'm no longer interested in my tree or in providing information except to people who are really related.

GR really is a member run site now, which means NO technical support as none of us could access that part of the site.

Good job that the main importance of GR has always been member help :-D .... at least that has been my belief since the day I joined back in 2004 ;-)

This question had cropped up regularly over several years.

I believe GR do keep record of member activity so it would not be difficult from a technical perspective to show "Last Active" date stamp against a member name.

However, for some reason, despite this suggestion being put forward to GR on many many occasions, there seems to be a reluctance to take it forward.

8.8 million numbers were allocated around June 2008, 10.7 million in about December 2009.

someone who joined today has a number over 14,300,000

Numbers have been given sequentially since the start, and it seems that numbers are not re-used.

If you've found someone who has the same name on their tree, when you click the 'find out more' button, it tells you the tree owners name and their membership number. The smaller the number, the longer its been since they joined the site.

Its possible to see the membership number of someone who has posted on the Boards by hovering your cursor over their 'name'. The number will be displayed in the bottom left corner if using a PC or LT. don't know if it works with tablets or other devices.

For instance, Darren who firsted registered his account in Oct 2004 has membership number of 1932718.
Greyghost July 2005 = 3458287
I first registered Feb 2003 = 239347

If you wanted to chceck if your private message has been read, look in your Sent Messages box. Ones which haven't been accessed have an envelope icon next to them.

Can never remember how to find the account number but -

GR never deletes an account unless the member themselves asks for it to be deleted. So a person could now have died, be incapacitated, no longer be researching etc

If they change the email address they joined GR with and don't notify the change they can't be notified there is a message for them

Some people joined to build trees and use records but never wanted contact with other members

If you hover over their avatar - either blank profile or a picture it will show how long they've been a member and if they've posted on the boards, but it doesn't really tell you much - after all yours shows you've been a member for 13 years but this is your first post. Not everyone actually posts.

I've just left a message with someone on this site, but I was wondering if there is a way of seeing how active the member is on this site, as Ancestry for example shows when they last logged on etc....... otherwise I could be waiting excitedly for a reply from someone who doesn't use the site anymore...

They have two accounts one is numbered 8.8million and the other 10.7 million anyone know if that means they are newish or old members?
