The most frequent ones I get are pre-recorded about PPI, and 'Your double glazing is out of date', mainly on 'witheld'.
I get the occasional 'international' number, but there's no-one at the other end, so the phone sits on the table until it beeps - at least that's 4 minutes they couldn't bother anyone else!! :-D

If you are on BT you need to sign up to the free call protect then you can dial 1572 immediately after a cold call,
Unfirtunately some of these dodgy companies manage to use random numbers to call from.
I,m fed up with the auto call About the urgent survey about whether we are on benefits. :-P

Talk Talk have issued a number to dial immediately after you have received an unwanted call..........14258. This, apparently, should block them from calling you again. Don't know if this just applies to Talk Talk customers though, but maybe worth a try??

I use a nickname - which isn't even a 'proper' name - for my first name on Facebook,
I love it when they ask for Mr or Mrs G (then my surname),
I just ask if Facebook have been selling phone numbers again!

I actually have a letter addressed to G (Surname), from a firm offering to claim back PPI - at a price! I claimed mine back years ago - and paid no-one.
I'm sorely tempted to let them waste their time :-D

They often mispronounce my surname so I truthfully say there's no one of that name in this house.

When we get the call from someone who reckons they are from Microsoft OH waits for them to say put on the computer so he says just a minute then puts the phone down for a couple of minutes then asks since when have Microsoft been looking after Apple computers and they put the phone down on him having wasted several minutes on him :-D

When they ask for a named person you could try "(S)he is ploughing the 10acre field but if you hold on for 20 minutes I can get him/her to the phone"

When the cold callers come on and in a foreign accent tell me their name is George or Elizabeth or something I always say "Why should I buy off you when you've already lied to me--anyhow I don't talk to foreigners in my house--Goodbye"..I don't get quite so many now... :-) :-) LES...

We get, perhaps one every two months. I usually tell them to stop wasting my time and to go do a 'Baldrick'.....!

ALL her calls go straight to the answer machine!! :-|

:-D :-D :-D

Our withheld numbers go straight to the answering machine, but strangely the vast majority hang up without leaving a message :-D :-D

Allan, the irony is, the cat lady won't answer the phone - you have to stand there while the message plays then say 'Hi X, it's Maggie' - then she'll pick up the phone :-S
Despite being number withheld - she still gets cold callers!
I've registered her with TPS - but she never tells the cold callers to take her off their list - or else - she just never answers them!

Maggie,

I have a similar problem to the one you mentioned in your opening post.

We don't normally answer withheld numbers, but if we receive one just as OH is setting off to her weekly craft meeting I do answer it as one of the other ladies in the group has a withheld number and she usually phones to ask OH to put in her apologies if she can't make the meeting

'James' called me again, just now :-D :-D
He was calling with regard to something about 'Homebase' in Southampton.
'Oh, I said, 'You called yesterday and disturbed me.
I'm on TPS, please take me off your list or Homebase Southampton will be Reported'

See - I can be polite :-D :-D :-D

I haven't been to Homebase in Southampton for years!!
