Barbra.

I have been on these boards since 2003/2004 and wouldn't leave them no matter how slow they get.

Before you couldn't keep up as the treads moved so quickly but I am so glad they have slowed down.

And don't think of leaving <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

It depends on how much you pay for your subscription on here Barbra. I have been a member since 2003 with automatic renewal turned on so I only pay £8.96p a year so it's worth it to me even if I only come on now and again. In the old days I used to be on the boards from early morning until at least teatime when hubby came home from work. He's retired now so I don't have as much time and am not really doing any research for myself anymore but at the subscription I pay I don't think I will be leaving unless they up the charges more than a bit.

There is nothing in the way of community boards on Ay. There is quite a lot of messaging between people with shared private trees for the most part tightly focussed on f.h. and local / military history. I have met some great people that way.
Roots gen. Also moves like treacle.

My subs are still low and I have no intention of leaving. I still find lovely people to chat to and interesting subjects as well, occasionally people 'call' in who are members and who don't post and it is like meeting old friends, like Joan I would really miss it, even though I catch up with some on Facebook.

I also have been a member since 2004, never had mor than the basic 12 month sub, and it is still low :-)

Barbra ................ be very very careful of those Ancestry trees. More of them are wrong than are correct.

One person puts up a tree and 10, 30, 100 or more people copy it without checking.

That's how my gt aunt and her husband who married in 1902 and emigrated to the US 2 days later got to be the parents of children born in the 1830s in the US :-S :-0 :-D

I joined in 2003 and still have cheap membership. I also have ancestry and FMP but while GR is cheap I'll stay a member. I've still made more connections via GR than any other site but not for some time now.

I stay in touch with friends who've given up GR via other sites or facebook.

GR won't be around much longer.

Why should Gr shut down?
The marginal cost of running it is minimal while Web stats suggest it remains a popular minority site with plenty of people shelling out up to £ 16 PA for basic and a lot more for census etc.
The main threat to its existence would be any changes to browser technology which force major updates. BS would be unlikely to fund a big re write. For a couple of years at least Gr is safe.

My subs are low because I joined in the old days !!! Before it was called genes reunited

I.m not leaving because how would I use my subs to Ancestry and FMP . I only occasionally find new info on my own tree so I use my subs to do look ups
Get the gotcha moment when finding for others just as much as my own gotchas

Am helping too on Facebook for the BHC site. My mums elder half sister was a BHC in 1909

Most enquiries on there are Canadian descendants and have no or very little info on the family of their BHC

Rambling Report 31 Jul 2017 13:24

Shirley, I feel my sub is worth it also for those gotcha moments for other people's searches :-)

My gt grandmother's 2 youngest sisters were BHC in 1884.

I joined in 2005 and think it is really value for money and will be forever grateful for the hot matches I got in the early years which got me back on the maternal side to the late 17th century.which is pretty hard on maternal side with surname changes.

I found a second cousin who sent me loads of photos and I helped him to identify.

I was housebound for over 3 years caring for my husband and while he was watching all the sport he could find on TV I was busy with either Family history or on chat boards
I don't come on as much as I did,but think the small subs are worth while and enjoy the occasional chat with people I have come to know.

I have had continuous Platinum and later Parish Subs here since 2011.
I can honestly say, I have not regretted a penny of it.

I shall be downgrading to Standard Subs for the first time in September as I tend to use the boards more now than research.

Like the rest of you, I really value the friends that I have made on here <3
So even at the full Standard Rate of almost £20 a year ... that works out to just 58p a week. You couldn't even meet a friend for coffee at that price.

And I'm with Sylvia about Ancestry Trees. Many of them are just fairy tales lol :-D

Agree with the Ancestry comments...the trouble is as the adverts suggest they give you so many hints and suggestions but people take them as gospel .... I gave up explaining to one woman that her facts about my immediate family were wrong, she kept saying but Ancestry tell me it's this.....it's a good site if you're ready to double check everything.
