Von - I dread to think what it would be like now. We stayed in a new-build apartment on the outskirts of the village. Its probably been over-developed since then. |

Our first holiday abroad was in about 1965. Nightime ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe than drove down through France to L'Estartit in Spain. Although we had 2 over night stops in France, we self catered in Spain as it was cheaper. Mum took 'the makings' for a picnic en route + cans of tinned meat amongst other things for when we arrived. This wasn't so much to avoid 'foreign food' as to help eek out the sterling that they were allowed to take out of the country. |

Struggling down to the beach with a windbreak & picnic chairs as well as a bucket & spade and fishing net. Never caught anything & probably wouldn't have known what to do with it if you did. |

It is not widely realised that S Devon beach sand is red. One year camping at Slapton my sister slipped on the beach sand/mud indelibly staining an expensive dress. Mum was really mad, I laughed a Wilfred Bramble larf. |

It's probably a combination of a lot of things, including sitting on a beach in the damp UK or in sunnier climes. |

Maybe it is just a new fashion for retro slow connecting up an old modem and blasting the boards at 56K. Or maybe writing letters to Mélanie Phillips and the Hopkins creature is back in vogue. Or maybe the discovery of a new species of native snake in England and an alligator at Chew Lake has struck terror into the hearts of the brexiteers. Maybe the expense of signing up for multiple alt.right subs and the high cost of coffee at Starbucks, Costa, JS et al has left nowt for poor Gr. |
