Had my 2nd cataract done yesterday.
They were only just starting and was advised to have them done as I drive.
This one was a bit more sore than the first, but I probably won't have to wear specs in a few weeks time.
Wish I'd washed my hair before I went as cant wash it for a week, then It's got to be a back wash .
Must say.local eye hospital is very good .keep giving you drinks ,biscuits and lunch time choice of sandwiches and cake .
Just hope the result comes up to expectations!
I will still need glasses for reading...hope I've written this OK as can't check very well

Well done Brenda. Hope all goes well and you get a good result. My mum had to have new glasses as her eyesight was much better after the op. :-D

Enjoy life without glasses, Brenda!!

I went from extreme short sight to long sight, had to have glasses for reading and the computer, but not otherwise .................... it still feels strange to get rain in my eyes 16 years after having them done :-D

Good news Brenda, hope all continues to go well with the eye and that you are enjoying (or will be when it settles) a brighter looking world.

Interesting Brenda as I have cataracts - had em for at least 3 years but no referral to hospital til they get worse

Ron...it may be that this is because I live in Wales......

I have been attending the eye clinic for 20 years, but not for cataracts,in fact didn't know I had a cataract.
I have had a mole on the eyeball for that time and was referred to hospital because it was near the optic disc and as it could nt be seen,I went once a year to check it hadn't grown.
When I went for usual check up last Dec.i mentioned that I could see better with that eye than the one without the mole,so specialist looked at other eye and said you have a cataract just starting,do you want me to take it off.I was quite surprised as I thought you had to wait until ripe, but when he said ,do you drive? And I said yes he advised that I had it done they don't peel off now, they shatter .I had that done in March and then he said do you want other eye doing,so I thought I should match and get it over,so both are now done and I go back in 3 weeks for check up..
I don't know if the service is as good in England or Scotland as it is in Wales, but I found them excellent and the hospital has such a good reputation that people come miles to this one instead of one that is nearer.it used to be The chest hospital and is
A very open airy old hospital that has never had Mrsa etc so it happens to be only about 3 miles away so I'm lucky that way.
Hope you soon get something done Ron and give the hospital a ring as I sounds like your need is greater than mine was.

I was the same as Ron. The optician said that as long as they could prescribe glasses which would enable me to see well enough to pass the DVLA sight test, there was no point in having the op.

Then it got to the point where they were having trouble getting glasses that worked well enough, so I was sent off to the opthalmic specialist and referred to hospital to be done.

The worst part was the gap of several months between the first eye and the second, because the difference in my sight was so great that the optician couldn't prescribe glasses for both eyes! Apparently they were so different that my brain wouldn't have been able to cope with trying to synchronise them. :-( :-( So they put a plain glass lens in my "new" eye and I was fine, but I wasn't allowed to drive!!

The gap was longer than it would normally have been because we had a holiday booked and they wouldn't let me fly after the op, so it had to be postponed until after we got home again.

I didn't have to wait here, they no longer insist on the cataract "ripening" ...... they want people back at work or doing normal activities as soon as possible.

Plus, my eyesight was so bad and he was going to use a new lens hat would change my vision from very short sighted to long sighted, so my specialist decided that he would sneak me in and I only had to wait 6 weeks before the second one was done :-D

My mother had both of her cateracts seen to over 20 years ago. She can still see really well so Brenda is set fair.

Very best wishes <3

My cataracts were done in 2000 .............. one eye is still very good but the sight in the left one is getting worse. It was always the worst eye.

Brenda ..............

if you have to have reading glasses, you might find that you need to ask them to give you graded lenses. I found that ordinary reading glasses were not good for computer work!

The graduated lens (from reader at the bottom to plain glass at the top) work just fine when I'm on the computer ........... I'm no longer having to bob my head or move my body closer to the screen etc.

I have special computer glasses. My ordinary glasses are bifocals, and using the computer (desktop with large monitor) was awkward and gave me a crick in the neck!!

The optician asked how far away the monitor was and then gave me glasses which let me see clearly at that distance. They are great, and not being fancy lenses, weren't very expensive.

Thanks for replies and suggestions.
Sylvia .I will see about graded lenses when I go for eye test in a few weeks after my check up in 3 weeks.Thank you for that.
I have bifocals which I have been happy with, couldn't cope with varifocals or contact lenses which I did have a go with a few years ago.

I play piano and have managed very well with bifocals to read music .i also have reactolite on my prescription glasses which have saved me having to carry sunglasses around and very useful when driving,so have to decide what to have..

At the moment I have my glasses low down over my nose like a mad professor to see what Im writing, but using no glasses otherwise.this is on my iPad and not computer, not tried that yet.
Hopefully will be able to drive next week and see how that goes.
Will let you know.

Brenda .........

I went crazy buying sunglasses after I had my eyes done.

I didn't need glasses outside (and I don't drive), so I could buy sunglasses with UVA and UVB lenses but wilder frames for only a few dollars!

I think I ended up with 8 or 9 pairs at one time!

I did find that I was much more comfortable with large lens that really covered my eyes, because I found that my eyes were much more susceptible to bright light, and small lens did not protect from light coming from the side.
