You might find something on the British Newspaper Archive. Selected newspapers are featured in the collection featured on both this site and Findmypast.
The main site is http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

I've had more success if they were living in rural areas rather than major towns.
If you know when and were they lived, you can research historical events for the period. Corn Laws, Peterloo Massacre etc etc.

Apart from that, you might find something amongst apprentiship records, Wills and parish records. Although most are straight forward eg Mary the daughter of John Smith and his wife Jane, occassionally you might get added details such as 'the town strumpet' or in the case of burials, out lived 4 husbands/wives.

HI out there ,

Is there a web site where reports of items covered in past annual or large area meetings report on what was covered at the meetings or subjects covered at the meetings. I am interested in how you find information on my family forbare's from 1840 back to 1600 IF that information is available at all, ( my family were not notables)

Thanks for any information at all

Cheers,
