New/Old £1 coins

With less than two months to go, there still seem to be far more old coins than new in circulation.

Are businesses just giving old ones out in change rather than banking them?

I was given 2 x old £1 coins during the last week in one transaction, but prior to that it is some time since I was given any in change.
New £1 coins seem to be the norm. around here.

We are not getting too many old £1 coins around here (Teesside), although I must admit if we get any in change we hang on to them as the car wash that my son uses still hasn't altered their machines so he can only use old £1 coins. I think they will have to get a move on and get them changed or they will lose money if no one can use them.

Some parking meters STILL don't take new £1 coins. :-( :-0

Same experience as Gwyn. Mind you, we tend to pay for most things over £5 by card rather than cash.

About a month ago we were approached in a small shop by a lady who was desperate to get her hands on the old style coins. The shop keeper didn't have any in his till.
It was her turn to visit a sick relative. The hospital car park still wouldn't accept the the new style coins.

I haven't had any old coins for ages.

One solution to the problem of machines is to nip into a travel agent or bank and buy a few euros. Although I have a feeling they only deal in notes? I have a few left from our last trip abroad. Usually they are put away until the next trip, but this time they are slowly being used.

I was given an old English £5 note in Glasgow on 8th May - 4 days after they had been withdrawn :-(
I handed it back pretty smartish :-|
