Sue ..... you are right to be very proud of your nephew.

It's going to take years to put right ...... so far I have heard estimates of 5 years, but New Orleans is still not back to rights after Katrina, and that's getting on for 12 years.

I think the Governor of Texas has been told the estimate is that $65 billion will be needed.

Anyway, Trump has now moved on .......... he's back to threatening North Korea and saying that getting his tax bill through is first priority. Texas will have moved to the back burner until he's once again reminded that he has to show his face down there.

He isn't responsible for the poor building regs in flood risk zones but he'll have to come up with billions of dollars to assist the towns/cities devastated PDQ.

I am proud that my nephew who lives in Houston has helped to get people to safety.

There are problems with utilities and food shortages, this won't get easier any time soon.

Dermot, it's not a case of any of us being unflawed but nor are we President of the USA, nor titled by many as "leader of the free world" with the obligations that come with that role.

I could put it in shorter terms ( 3 words!) but the expression might offend some delicate sensibilities, so I will just say that it is the general opinion of those with a scrap of intelligence that he is wholly unsuited to the role, mentally and temperamentally and from all other angles, and a man with less self-regard would recognise it for himself.

Media & threads like this one condemn President Trump but continue to write about him.

He may not possess one of the keenest brains - but none of us can claim to be unflawed.

First line responders literally hate politician "photo ops" ...... it takes them away from what they have to do just to stand around "supporting" a politician.

We are having a horrendous wildfire season in BC, we got a new provincial government and Premier in June ........... the Premier's brother is a fireman and told his brother "Do NOT go to the front lines for a photo op. It's only an unnecessary distraction."

So the new Premier did not do that .... instead, 2 days after he had been inducted into office, he went to a reception centre for people evacuated from a fire, talked to those people, and he visited a respite area for off-duty fire fighters and talked to whoever was around. There were no set piece "photo ops".

That way, he didn't disrupt any work, but he did get to talk to ordinary people who were scared, worrying abut what was going to happen next, etc.

He got even better press for that!!!

Since then, he has apparently been in constant contact with all the people and services working on the fires and helping evacuees, but only made a visit to the area yesterday .... and then he did not go to an active fire area.

Just imagine the disruption that Trumpoid is going to cause in that poor city, with all his Secret Service agents, motor cavalcades, etc etc.

It does seem to count with some people that the President has shown up to show his concern, give them a hug, spout useless words, etc ................. but not the responders trying to save people.

It's a photo opportunity. He can see it on TV or online from The White House

Trump has annulled new regulations which would have forced building and infrastructure regulations that flood impact must be taken into account. He did this just last week.

Lol well I did read it that way. I haven't seen the Metro today just going on the BBC news channel. I admit the mere mention of him makes me feel sick at the best of times, I would only want him visiting me in those circumstances if I could be sure I could surreptitiously hold him under the water :-D

Andysmum Report 29 Aug 2017 15:33

I was being sarcastic!

The bit about not going sooner is in today's Metro.

Rambling

Rambling Report 29 Aug 2017 15:28

Nothing that I saw about him being criticised for not going sooner? only that he is "anxious" not to get the same criticism faced by Bush after hurricane Katrina.

Poor man my a** !

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 29 Aug 2017 15:13

I didn't see the bit about his umbrella, but according to the news he is being criticised for not going sooner, and the Texans don't want to have to deal with a presidential visit in the current circumstances!!

Poor man can't win! :-( :-( :-S :-S

Rambling Report 29 Aug 2017 14:11

to fly to disaster hit Texas, and he can't even fold down his own umbrella when he gets to the top of the steps :-P
