Suzanne ..........

there is a law here that no-one should drink in public ........ that is so outdated that it means that one cannot drink on one's own sundeck or patio if it can be seen from the street. That aspect is now ignored ......... so pubs and restaurants can have patios that are open to the street and people can drink there.

BUT it is not allowed to drink in parks, the beaches, or walking down the street. The police stop you and will pour out the alcohol, and can also give you a fine or a ticket..

It does NOT stop the homeless drinking .......

........... though you may well find that drugs are much more a problem. I've been reading about some drug that is now popular in the UK that causes people to stagger and act like "zombies".

It's apparently in Manchester .......... which is very close to my home town .............. but reports I read last week said it was now common in lots of places.

Unfortunately I can't remember its name, it may be connected to marijuana?????

As regards Lime Street Station, and being approached for money. I remember being accosted by a man there back in the 60s, and having to run back!!

Things don't change very much

I'm not being blase ....... it's just that things are changing everywhere.

Most of the people who approach for money here are very polite and no danger .............. I just shake my head and say "sorry".

Not sure Sylvia, just caught a mention on the lunchtime news.

They do usually rake it and have it in top notch condition so I wonder whether some pollution has occurred accidentally.

Good point, Sylvia.

By the way, Scarborough has been admonished this week because it's beach is not up to par. :-S

Barbra ................

many of our homeless also have dogs. They may be pets, but it also seems that some (??how many) have the pet only because they get an extra allowance on their welfare payment to buy "dog food".

Do they????????

I think everyone's right, Suzanne, it's not just Liverpool.

It's my home town too and I'll be there in a few weeks visiting family when we can sort out a suitable date for all of us. :-D

Don't forget that 'some' - probably only a few- beggars do actually have a home and a state provided income. Like office and other workers, they 'commute' to where the rich pickings are.
Unfortunately, their actions detract from the genuine homeless etc etc.

Square pegs in round holes, what ever the genuine cause.

Its heart breaking what is happening all over the world .not just our cities we went to Edinburgh & didn't walk far along one of the shopping areas .people just asking for money many have a wee dog I know they will. probably have these as their only companion .we are in 2017 empty houses all over this shouldn't be happening .what to do though .to little to late for many .Barbara

When cuts and more cuts are made ( incl' council services), where the job market has become so laughable that the local job centre is classing a vacancy that is less than 10 hours per week as a "HOT JOB", the ' so called 'Zero hour contract' that leaves people not knowing from one week to the next what their income will be, . When life becomes such a struggle that working people go to food banks and rents are unaffordable in many places....

And of course there is and always has been a drugs & drink problem, I don't think I have ever lived or visited anywhere in the last 40 years where there wasn't a noticeable problem ...including Wales ( though I allow it's not as visible in rural areas).

Yes you can clear people 'away' but that doesn't tackle the underlying problems.

Perhaps LG can ask 'why' there's noticeable number of Liverpool rough sleepers/homeless? It's probably not just one reason but many.

All British cities, even Bournemouth, have this problem and it is getting worse. Many seaside towns have big problems too.

Nothing much is being done about it.

Suzanne ............

out of interest, how is it stopped where you live??

We have the same problem to Liverpool where I live, and in almost every town and city around the world form what I read ........ most of them are trying desperately to stop it, without much success. It seems as though as soon as 1 person is re-housed off the street, 2 more are there.

BTW ........... I spent 5 years at the uni in Liverpool in the early 1960s, and there was the terrifying no-go area on Brownlow Hill between the Uni and the Adelphi Hotel even then.

It is awful isn't it. One of my family helps out on the Liverpool street team and kitchen for them. They are not given money but food, clothing and sleeping bags. Some of their stories are so sad :-(
