It's funny to see Rollo post that "The local "A road" system could not cope with the traffic resulting in ordinary life getting all snarled up"

About 25-30 years ago, my brother did a lot of driving up and down the UK, he was on the roads 5 or 6 days a week ............. he took the A road whenever possible as, even then, he found them faster than the motorways

Sylvia fairly obviously has not had the misfortune to drive around England much in the last ten years Not only are the motorways badly in need of expansion and repair but the A/B classified road system around most medium and large towns is also a slow moving jam for much of the day. Moving traffic of, say, the M3 onto the A31 would never work. Indeed the A31 , A36 A414 A12, A13, A2, A25 A38 and many more have serious problems of there own without decanting traffic fom motorway jams.

And then if you do get a bit of clear road it will be limited to 50mph. I doubt Sylivia's rellie had to deal wkth the ubiquitous speed cameras either

We regularly drive on 'A' roads.
Much better to pootle along at 30mph, than remain stationary for half an hour or more!

....and we quite often find a friendly 'hostelry' on the way :-D

A few years ago, there was a TV programme, where two cars had to reach the same place - one went via the motorway, the other using minor roads.
Both had to stop for lunch.
The one using the minor roads had a lovely lunch - the one stopping at Motorway services - not so nice.
Those using the minor roads arrived 10 minutes later than those using the motorway - but were not as stressed!!!
