Is it better than DVD, or is the quality of picture dependent on the TV? Also will Blu Ray players play DVDs too? I am not hopeless when it comes to tech, but get a bit glazed with too much information...

For info

Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a digital optical disc data storage format. It was designed to supersede the DVD format, in that it is capable of storing hours of video in high-definition (720p and 1080p) and ultra high-definition resolution (2160p).

A Blu-ray player can play both Blu-ray and DVD, but a DVD player cannot play back a Blu-ray disc. ... DVD is specific for that format of video (standard definition format, by the way, which is another good reason to upgrade to an HD-capable Blu-ray player).

Blu ray is the more up to date

blu ray gives a much better picture than dvd BUT the tv must be up for it and support 1080p resolution and 32in or better. Blu ray is esp great with movies with big graphics content eg Gravity, Lord of the rings. Use HDMI to connect the player to yr TV not scart.

It is difficult to play blueray on a computer cos you need compliant graphics card, player and monitor!

Bluray never caught on as hoped so now it is ez to get an inexpensive player and there are lots of movies on eBay.

BluRay is being superceded by 4K.

Interesting & informative. Thanks Rollo.
Our DVD player isn’t used that much & tends to ‘skip’ parts when it is. We were considering replacing it with a blue ray version. We’ll have another think.
