I'll paraphrase what I posted and then Rollo deleted...

Having driven in Australia, although only for a month I thought the UK standard was worse although Malta take some beating when it comes to poor driving.

Most cars on the road in 2018 have sat navs with audible warnings when entering speed limit changes. Our car cannot be unique in having that and gizmos which can be set for urban and motorway cruise limiters.

I would like to think that the rules of the road are obeyed and that would save a driver from the heavy burden of having maimed or killed someone.

If that was childish I'll eat my imaginary hat!

We're all ignorant, so understanding sentences so written badly makes difficult comprehensively.
We were educated moreso, us knew sentences what mean.

Why? Because 'unintrenchable' has no meaning.

So what is the word 'Obviously' implying this situation?

Perhaps the author is very cleverly going beyond the 'obvious', :-D and can see the word could be a replacement for 'unintentional', in which case, the response 'Obviously' (with no emoticon) is there intentionally (or intrenchionally :-D ) to display the author's disrelish of the situation.

Shame really.

So, now I've got the gist of Rollo's writing from Sue, I can comment.

The standard of driving improved in Oz from the 1970s to the early 2000s both in urban and rural driving areas.

It compared badly with that of the UK in the 70s and 80 but extremely favourably by the early 2000s.

Several years ago one of my relatives described the driving in the region I live in as 'dog eat dog'. It was. That stretch of road he spoke about has since been vastly improved in behaviour and traffic flow by imposed lower speed limits, although there will always be risk-takers as well as people unwilling to drive on it.

Have you noticed how the sort of people who appear on the Jeremy Kyle Show pepper their conversation with 'basically' and 'obviously' in a bid to sound better educated?

JoyLouise, when we first arrived in West Oz in 1982, driving compared to the UK, was very poor :-(

Now I'm not sure what has happened in the UK since, but certainly here driving standards have declined considerably
