Our local Co-op has exchange bookshelves in its foyer and our local pub also has similar. I've always thought them a good idea.

We are also lucky enough with our libraries although with reduced hours.

Hubby was an avid reader and absolutely loved books
Stemmed from being ill a lot as a child and spending weeks in bed sometimes

He never liked getting rid of them either so when he passed there was a huge stack of mostly paper backs , but some hard backs too lining the shelves and stacked on the floor under the shelves in the walk in cupboard under the stairs

He had a huge collection too of music cds ,mostly classical as well as dvds

I passed on his clothes to the local Sense charity shop and as an afterthought asked if they were interested in the books etc

They jumped at them

What was nice to see on several occasions when I was shopping in the centre was the books displayed on bookshelves just inside the doors and folks looking and selecting to buy

I too try to avoid buying from Amazon.
Fortunately, we have a local Oxfam bookshop, and an old fashioned second hand bookshop. Both were regularly trawled when I was at Uni.

I have had to ban myself from both, until I've got rid of some of the books I currently have :-(

As you know, I don't know much and am always behind everybody else in discovering things. Well, last night,I made quite a delightful discovery which might well lead me off the straight and narrow.

If we are going anywhere where I know I will be bored, I will take a couple of books with me. I left two somewhere and I can't remember where. One of them, I had two copies of anyway so it did not need to be replaced but the other I replaced from Amazon (somebody else had to do the ordering because I don't know how to and nor do I intend to learn!). It was bought as a second hand late edition paperback and arrived as an early edition hardback. Unfortunately the late addition had an addenda which had the crunchy bit in it for me.

Last night, I thought I would see if it might be free online anywhere but, when I put in the name of the author, the book came up as being available from Oxfam.

I had never thought to look at Oxfam for a book before but was utterly delighted to see what was on offer there, heavy, heavy reading, good stuff! Must get OH to take the credit card away before I look on there again as would much rather buy from them than from Amazon.
