I feel a bit of a harridan now! :-(
I've had my cats since they were born here - product of a rescue cat who, despite my being assured she was spayed - wasn't!

Food is kept in a cupboard - though sachets are usually on a work surface.
They are banned from work surfaces, and usually comply to this 'request' (they know the word 'down'). Though they (or rather Betty) regularly sit on the table, but it's by the window, and I'm not THAT harsh! Betty has also taken to going window side of the blind. George has always done the same in my bedroom.

Before Mister (their brother) died, I was very strict about them eating out of their own bowls, which were always in the same place - otherwise Mister would have eaten everyone's food. Now I'm not bothered - Betty prefers George's bowl - but George was a stickler for the eating routine, and was initially confused, but is learning he can now eat out of either - and I put more in his bowl now, anyway.

Occasionally one or other will sit on the steps/stool in the kitchen when I'm preparing food, and show an interest. I'll give them a bit, but usually they'll sniff it, maybe eat a bit, then walk away - they've never been fed 'human' food, or from the table.
Even if I'm eating my dinner, and they jump on the table - they'll sniff, but nothing else (before the word 'down' is projected loudly).

George nearly always sleeps on my bed at night, and comes downstairs with me if I need an 'early hours' pee. He will then have a snack, go outside for 5 or 10 minutes (for a pee?) then come back upstairs.
Betty likes a variety of sleeping places, from a piece of paper or plastic bag, to the sofa, a dining chair or just the floor, occasionally my bed. But she does like her old towel. If I put it on the dining chair - that's where she'll sleep at night!

So, sort of trained. Neither Betty or George (nor the late Mister) has ever bitten or scratched anyone in malice (Betty and George nibble when they're happy, and Mister had non-retractable claws, so quite often left claw marks when trying to get attention). Betty will spit at George when he wants to 'play' and she doesn't, but has only spat at a human twice. Once when my grandson pushed the chair she was balanced on around the room, and once when a workman came - she really didn't like him - he only walked in the door, and she did a fine impression of a cobra! :-S :-S

One of my late cats, Toby, would manage to flip open the cardboard tab of his cat biscuit box and help himself to his biscuits. If the level was too low, he would tip over the box till it released a few bikkies.

No Gooner, he can't open them.

We went out last night and, when we came home, there were four packets on the doorstep. He had gnawed each one of them to get in.

They are clever especially where food is concerned

My Mr Tibbs has felix in jelly packs in the morning and Purina dry in the evening

I buy the big pack of Purina and as it's heavy it's sits on the floor beside the recycle bin

He knows exactly what's in it . If I venture into the kitchen he will follow and sit and wipe his face against the packet and look at me and then do it again. I often say no you have been fed already but then alright then just a little bit else the vet will tell me off for you being too fat !!

My daughter says Mum he has you twisted around his paws !! He owns you not the other way around

I knew Jacky Milburn was a thief before I took him in because I saw him carry something off from my kitchen.

He does have a huge appetite, nothing wrong just a gutbucket who needs four or five sachets a day. It looks like he is good at training his people too.

When he wants food, he takes a sachet out of the box and drops it at Daddy's feet.
