The usual fit is horizontal.the keys look a bit like car ignition keys

There's no pushing the key out, Shirley.

You lock our door and pull the key back but leave it where it is. From outside, a person can then unlock the door with his/her key without dislodging the inside key at all - it stays in its position.

Yours sounds as though it could be the same.

what you mustn't do , is insert the key from inside, and part turn it... that way the key outside can't displace the inner key and you'll be stuck!!


no harm really, if the keys are lined up, either will open the door....


personally I prefer a key in the lock.....no faffing around in an emergency trying to find and fit the key...

My worry is not being to get out if there was a fire thats why I leave keys in

both doors are the replacement ones with security 5 part locking system

My home insurance is based on them being locked .

The back door is slightly different in that if it's unlocked you can just walk in

The front door still needs a key to open it even if it's not locked but it would be vulnerable to being opened like the Yale locks

Might it be worth getting a locksmith round for advice? They may be able to suggest a replacement to provide both security & safety.

Probably the greatest danger of locking the doors & removing the keys is that you’ll be in too much of a panic to undo them in an emergency.

Yes joy I have found I can push the frontdoor key in from the outside if I have gone out and forgotten to remove the key

I go out the back door as the garage is in the back garden

The key has to be in the right position in the door to push it in from the outside though

You may find that, like ours, Shirley, you can leave your door key only half-way in and people can still use theirs from the other side. That works a treat so it's worth checking.

Even grandaughter wouldn't be able to get in to help you if the keys were still in the locks, Shirley.
Perhaps you could choose somewhere near the door, but not visible from outside, to leave your keys.

My daughter suggested one of those alarms Det .its something I am thinking about too
I must rethink my habit of locking the front and back doors and leaving the keys in.

My thinking has been if I need to get out in a hurry then I won't be faffing around looking for keys.
My grandaughter has spare keys just in case but as both doors have the central locking system and several other internal bolts they won't be easy to break into

I have to get into the habit of at least removing the front door key

Just proves you were right not to have it taken out. You would have got next to nothing selling it on and then it would have cost you another fortune to have one put in!

I am noticing my age now as young men are offering me their seats on the underground :-( ......Can't they see I am 21? (well at least in my head!):-D

If you haven’t one already, have you considered getting a personal pendant-style alarm? It’s not fun being stranded on the floor with no one to help. ;-)

Good for you Shirley. I have two banister rails which I'm grateful for but I can see the day coming in the not too distant future when a stair lift will be needed. Had both of my knees replaced and now one of my hips is playing up and I've been told it will probably need to be replaced at some point - but it's not bad enough yet.

Hope the stair lift makes things easier for you.

We had a stair lift put in in jan 2015 for hubby

He was having bad mobility problems and balance but he got very grumpy when i suggested stair lifts , giving up driving etc etc

Grandson said to him stop being a stubborn old git and listen to nan . she is worried you will fall down the stairs and really hurt yourself. Well that did the trick and a quick repaint of the hall and stairs and new carpet fitted and it was in . He loved it !!

so when he passed in oct 2015 grandson said are you going to get it taken out ?
NO was my reply ,we paid for it to be put in and i may need it one day

Well one day is now upon me ! i have balance probs now , some days worse than others. i struggle going up stairs and steps ,coming down is easier one step at a time but being careful not to do my trick of catching the toe of one foot in the other trouser leg and going A over Apex !!

i have started to use the chair lift just as a precaution cos if i fall i am on my own so could be disastrous

Thought i should get the stair lift serviced too as it has been in situ and not looked at

Done today ,its in good working order so now i can zoom away as much as I want

as we said to hubby better to be safe than have a fall
