How can I find out when my Uncle returned to England from India. He was out there in 1931, married with a son. He was in the army with the Sussex Regiment (so I am told). His wife came back in 1934.
Can anyone assist me in this quest please. He died in 1979 in Sussex.
May thanks
Phyll

He might be on the incoming passenger lists to c1960 if he travelled on a civilian vessel. Do you want to give us his name??

Other than that, further UK postings or his eventual discharge are probably mentioned on his army service records. They aren't on line. You'd have to send for a copy from the MOD at a cost of £30.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:

Have you found him on the 1939 Register? Serving soldiers wouldn't be shown if they were with their regiment.

Thanks Detective

His name was Arthur William Newman, born 1904 in West Grinstead, Sussex. I'm afraid I don't have access to 1939 census. I will look on the incoming passenger lists.

If you can help a little more, that would be great. I don't hold out much hope though.

Thanks Shirley
I had found that information. I don't understand why she would be sailing from Australia. I know she came home with her son but not her husband.
Is it likely that he also sailed from Australia?
I wish I'd asked more questions when he was alive. I know Arthur & Alice divorced but when I don't know.

So as he passed in 1979 he should be an open record on the 1939 register but he isn't showing

Sorry, missed the bit about Bombay
I guess that is it then unless I send for his service record. I'm afraid that will have to wait but I thank you all for your help.
