Sharron Report 1 May 2018 11:09

Early sixties a young single mother (her husband was a local bloke who was inside for embezzlement and she would not take him back) lived next door to me.

We became good friends and were so through her next, not very successful marriage, two more children and another pretty blissful marriage to a good, good man who had previously been married to her sister.

We stayed friends and I saw her most days until I was made redundant in 1980 and our paths rarely crossed until last year when I attended the funeral of her lovely husband.

We exchanged e-mail addresses and she promised to contact me after she had been to a wedding up north and her daughter in Scotlands birthday. She was busy and coping.

Her sister -in-law lives in the next village to me and she was planning to visit both of us on a day in April.

Last week, there was another e-mail saying she couldn't come down because, after she came home, everything kind of landed on her and she went into overdrive. She had lost it and it sounded so,so familiar. I could tell her exactly how she was feeling and what she was afraid of.

Yesterday,OH took me up to her house to visit. I won't drive that far alone at the moment and neither will she.

I came home feeling like I had been crying for a week, which I hadn't, but it was like something had been moved about a bit in my head and, from her e-mail, I think she was feeling better for it too.

It is just so good that, after such a very long time, we are able to support each other through a very similar situation.

What goes round comes round I suppose.

I so hope so, Maggie.

Went back a bit today though, ran out of steam quite quickly after I had made tea.and somebody else had to do it.

I can imagine, seeing your friend where you were, months ago must have been emotionally draining. :-(

No doubt the visit brought up lots of stuff Sharron but I am sure you will cope better next time you meet, and the time after that

It's always lovely to catch up with people from the past, altho sad if you find they have already passed on. If you can re-connect, it's great.

I didn't do that well today. I am only progressing in baby steps and it did knock me back a bit meeting her. Ran out of steam quite quickly.

Today was the first time you have come up against this situation, Sharron. Naturally it took the stuffing out of you, but give yourself time to recover and you will move forward again.

It is quite a challenge to deal with someone else's issues while still recovering yourself and very draining too. It's why counselling sessions usually are no longer than an hour. It will have helped her to talk to you and good that you could understand. Just let your mind calm again and keep taking those baby steps as they all count! :-)

I am thinking that we are supporting each other again after such a very long time.

Strangely, we were coming out with different thoughts and feelings we had had and they were the same. At least I am sure that OH knows I am not making it up..
