My baby brother (66 on Thursday) married in May 1976 and are still together. Their surnames both began with W, as did my other brother's and his wife's surnames.

I got a free membership to Pebble Beach - came with the job - but I had to pay for the t-shirt and bar tab. The firm paid for the green fees. Before you ask the answer is 9 (at that time) so I did not have to queue..

Historically Christmas was a popular time to get married as people did not have many days off and income tax only came in (as a temporary measure).during the Napoleonic Wars.

May Day was seen as heathen and maybe the clerics colored people's perception of May. I think H E Bates had quite a lot to say about the matter.

An even nicer one along the coast, Rollo.

Almost twenty years since I was last there but enjoyed free coffee in the sumptuous clubhouse and, surprisingly, the children's clothes in the cloistered shops were only a little more than in outside stores. The layout reminded me of my old school (not the golf course of course) which, I have to add, I hated ... but it was aesthetically pleasing.

However, even for members to play a round it cost a lot.

As far as the tax thing is concerned I got the benefit of tax back as we married in the first week in October - it was a weird situation that couldn't last. From memory, I think it worked out that I was classed as two women - a crazy ruling .... but we newly-weds weren't complaining.

Someone with a better memory than I have (or who worked in finance) could tell me I am wrong though.

Of course, the Royals are excluded from these 'old wives' tales - isn't that so? ;-)

LaGooner - :-D :-D :-D

Phyll, I've heard the saying.
My parents married in September - I don't think it was for tax purposes, it was because my dad was being sent to Malta! :-D

I have heard marry in May and Rue the day.

When I was young weddings tended to be April or early September when that meant I think the largest amount of tax refund. Can't remember exactly (I'm sure Rollo will put me right). I know we married the last Saturday in August and got a good refund. Maybe if you married in May you forfeited a refund or something. These saying were sometimes linked to fact.

I've not heard the saying about weddings in May., but strangely I don't think there have been any close family weddings in this month.

The only 'Old wives tale' I can recall regarding weddings was about surnames......

'Change the name and not the letter, change for worse and not for better '

Bojo obviously has gone short on May and his confederate Gove is not buying in.

Meanwhile May Slaughter and May are ably kicking stuff all the way to Cannery Row.

"Cannery Row's inhabitants are, as the man once said, "whores, pimps, gamblers, and sons of bitches," by which he meant Everybody. "

fwiw Rollo lived a season in Monterey. Nice golf cpurse.

Stockbrokers say "Sell in May and go away"
- a maxim which I have always found to be profitable.

Don't remember that one

The only one my mum would say ne'er caste a clout till may is out .
Sooo we weren't allowed to caste off the winter liberty bodices till 1st June

Buttt it seems now to indicate it's the May blossom that has to be out not the end of May month :-| :-\

I keep remembering what my Mum used to say about this
'Marry in May, rue the day'.

Has anyone else ever heard of this possibly old wives tale.
