But Sharron thinking outside the box....rowboat with one of the high tides....land wherever you're able....nick a car/bike/horse/whatever...drive/ride around the island for the day...use counterfeit money to buy a choc ice and some chips ...row backed before they all wake up to the fact....

I caught the ferry to Yarmouth once.
It was in early April - thus 'out of season'.
There were no buses from Yarmouth, to anywhere.

Yarmouth (around the ferry) is quite boring after 2 hours :-|

Edit: I also went to the Isle of Skye in May last year.
Fortunately, we (sister & I) intended hiring a car.
Absolutely no buses running in Skye.
Stagecoach (who have the franchise) were being their usual 'we have the franchise, we'll run buses when we want' selves.
Unfortunately for them, all the drivers were 'local' and didn't agree with them - hence, no buses!!

I did think out of the box.

I thought to stay over here and spend my money on the mainland, it's only the bloody Isle of Wight, not somewhere exotic where I am going to go to all the trouble of car hire and getting to the ferry by public transport.

There are places here on the mainland.

Yes Rollo I know hence the boats come in early and leave late....oh.....and it was a joke...Sharron would more likely use a plastic pig than a rowboat no doubt.

There is a high tide twice a day in the Solent Caroline. So only a small window of opportunity for a row boat. Hence the Pompey expression "rowing against the tide".

Think out of the box.
You can rent a car for the day for £30 upwards. Go as a foot passenger and pick up the car in the IOW.
Big savings though somebody has to be on lemonade.
Save even more.
Go as a foot passenger and use the island buses. They also have a small railway with old Underground trains.
Sailing across is also quite good fun from Lymington or the Hamble no tickets needed. Be careful of the tides. Your coracle might do after all many have succeeded with a windsurfer and a natty line in wetsuits.

More seriously the high fares are slowly killing the IOW economy.

It was with the car but that ferry sailed anyway but without the £39 I was prepared to pay because it is possible to sail for that price AND the Isle of Wight economy has to do without the money I would have spent over there but chose to spend on the mainland.

Disappointing. Was that as foot passengers or with the car?

Didn't go.

We did not pre-book to go to the Isle of Wight but had looked up the price of an economy ticket which was £39 although Wightlink don't just state what price they charge, you need to look.

OH went into the office to buy the ticket and I expected there to be a couple of quid on top of the £39 because we had not pre-booked.

What I did not expect was to be charged £75 for a day trip. He had to go back in and ask for our money back, I was not going to pay nearly double!
