............. seeing the thread by AndysMum re a little boy burnt by picking up hot bbq coals on a beach (!!!!)))

I was reminded of this event that happened in a town in BC a few weeks ago.

Family had a fire pit in their backyard, 13 year old daughter was dancing around it but was VERY aware of the dangers of camp fires, fire pits and BBQs, so was keeping her distance.

BUT a spark flew out of the fire pit, landed on her hair on which she had recently used hair spray.

Immediate flare-up, and the child was on fire.

Unfortunately the parents had just gone inside to get something and by the time they got back out on hearing the screams, she had dropped and rolled in an attempt to put out the flames, but most of her head, shoulders and arms were on fire ............... think of where hair spray can fall as you spray it :-(

She is in hospital in Vancouver with 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns. She will need skin grafts on her face but they think she will recover with minimum scarring.

Poor girl, I hope she will make good recovery.

Anyone using a barbeque, firepit etc should keep a bucket of water and one of sand close by, or fire extinguiser and fire blanket handy.

Liz ...............

Drop, roll and cover is what is taught here.

Water not a good thing to throw over someone burning, especially if it is or contains alcohol or similar.

The thing is this poor girl had been taught all of this, and she did drop and roll ......... but I guess she never expected a spark to jump so far nor had she thought of the effect of the hair spray.

Those of us who have camped and/or had wood camp fires have all had sparks hit our clothes and hair. Quickly slapped out, and usually a little burn hole is all that appears.

The lesson really is HAIR SPRAY is dangerous!!!!

I agree, it's a lesson we should all learn but I was taught many years ago to have a bucket of water etc handy when barbecuing.

I think it's more to put out a fire or barbecue if it gets out of hand. Dropping and rolling etc is fine but I can't't imagine it's easy if you are in a paved or shingled area.

I bet that poor girl won't use hairspray again, hope her recovery is good.
