Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 12 Jul 2018 15:43

I had my first bout of gout a few years ago in the joint of the left big toe

So painful ! it was hot and the whole foot swelled up and wasnt able to get any footwear on at all

Tablets cleared it and all ok for some time

The same joint on the right foot sometimes felt it was coming out in sympathy!!

A few weeks ago yet another flare up that resulted in an emergency weekend appointment and then medication given that despached it in a few days

Last week I was refilling the soft water unit and managed to drop one salt block on my right foot , Agony and a big bruise followed over the whole top of the foot

It's gradually healed but it's left a painful toe joint that's feels like gout

I am having trouble walking now and it's agony
Volterol isn't helping at all,

It's bee painful !!!

I've never had gout Shirley, but I've read it's painful. It must be when one joint can affect your walking.

Rest it until it eases.

I had gout about 12 years ago.it just appeared suddenly, very painful, couldn’t get shoes on.
I was prescribed Allopurinol 1 tab 3 times a day, which I religiously take every day as I don’t want it coming back.
I sympathise with you ,Shirley,I just couldn’t even bear a sheet covering me in bed.
Touch wood, I haven’t had it back.
My late husband cut a piece out of my slipper, but he cut the sole as well.
I never let him forget it!
Hope you get it sorted soon.
Incidentally I am not a drinker ,well very rarely so can rule that story out! Lol :-D

I also have gout in both big toe joints, just recovering from the left one then the right flaring up last week.

The first bout about 6 years ago was by far the worst, now I know to catch it early

Problem is .............. I can't take ANY of the oral drugs that would help, so I have to resort to ice packs, foot up, and resting. I walk as little as possible, don't go out of the house. I'm lucky that OH already does almost all the cooking so I can take it easy.

Did you know that discomfort and pain of those toe joints at night caused by the weight of the sheet is one of the first signs, and also one of the diagnostics that doctors use???

I discovered that about a month ago when a friend had her first bout and eventually went to the doctor.

Brenda .......... I also don't drink! I haven't had a drink in about 8 years, and was a very light drinker before then.

But it isn't actually caused by alcohol ........... it's a form of arthritis, and I have arthritis in various other joints that I take medication (Tylenol/paracetemol) for. I guess not too surprising that I also then got gout!

One of my brothers had it some years back, he was hospitalised on a drip.

Yes I do have arthritis in my right knee .also in some fingers that are developing
distorted knuckles

Have had big problems with the right knee for a few weeks after doing a long drive that the leg didnt like

I know eventually that knee will need the op but have been ticking over with it

Gout though is another spectrum. It's so painful. The foot just doesn't like any touch at all .even the bedclothes are too much

I hate this getting old era :-| :-| :-P

The pain is caused by chemicals forming between the joint that crystallizes

Sylvia,I thought I was not doing too badly, odd aches and pains, but these last few months have had stomach pain and feel bloated,.have been diagnosed with gall stones and waiting for an op to take the gall bladder away.
That makes you realise that it is getting old!

I am lucky that I can still drive as I live alone and up a hill.

I’m sorry that you can’t take the medication to prevent the gout coming back as it has worked for me.Another friend of mine had it ,but was given steroids and it came back, but now his dr has put him on allopurinol and it seems to work for him.

Thinking of you <3

I too am/was a sufferer, it is accumalation of uric acid crystals in a joint, not necessarily due to being a drinker.i am on allopurinol, which seems to be having the desired effect!j
